No. 10 Royals Double Up Racers 8-4 Behind Seeley and Sims

Fayette, MO – The No. 10 Hope International University baseball team (38-14) began the NAIA Opening Round with an 8-4 win over the University of Northwestern Ohio on Monday evening at Central Methodist University in Fayette, MO.

Trey Seeley (8-3) picked up his eighth win as he threw 6 1/3 innings allowing three runs, four earned on four hits while walking four and striking out 11. Derek Sims led the Royals offense going 1-for-3 with 4 RBIs including a huge three run home run.

Seeley put the Racers down in order in the top of the first while the Royals offense broke through in the bottom half. With two on and nobody out JJ Cruz ripped an RBI single up the middle to put the Royals up 1-0. Later with two outs and two runners still on Derek Sims crushed a three run bomb over the towering wall in left field to increase the Royals lead to 4-0. Seeley meanwhile worked around a walk in the top of the second to retire the side while the Royals offense added to their lead in the bottom half. This time the Royals took advantage of a two out error to increase their lead to 5-0. The Royals would then load the bases for Dean Toigo who delivered an infield single to make it 6-0. Sims then walked in another run as the Royals took a commanding 7-0 lead.

Seeley meanwhile kept the Racers at bay through the first three innings but they would eventually break through with a run in the top of the fourth to make it 7-1. Seeley then limited the damage with a huge strikeout to end the inning. The Royals then added to their lead in the bottom of the sixth as David Rivera blasted his 13th home run of the year to make it 8-1. The Racers continued to battle and would get within 8-4 in the top of the seventh after taking advantage of a pair of Royals errors. That's all the Royals would allow as Steven Ordorica slammed the door coming in from the bullpen to get out of the jam with a strikeout and a groundout. Ordorica then shut down any hope of a Racers comeback as he retired them in order in the top of the eighth and ninth innings to seal an 8-4 win.

The Royals now advance to the winner's bracket to take on the hosts and No. 8 Central Methodist University on Tuesday, May 14 at 3:00 PM PT/5:00 PM CT.
