Royals Smash DIII Poets 28-1 in Record Breaking Performance

Fullerton, CA – The No. 16 Hope International University baseball team (28-9) extended their modern day record winning streak to 16 games as they smashed the NCAA Division III Whittier College Poets 28-1 in a record breaking performance on Tuesday evening at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA.

David Rudd-Grow got the start and pitched 2 innings allowing just one hit while striking out three. Joshua Ross (2-1) picked up the win in relief pitching 2 innings allowing one run on two hits while walking one and striking out two. Dean Toigo led the Royals offense going 1-for-3 with 5 RBIs including a grand slam.

Rudd-Grow shutdown the Poets in the first working around a leadoff single to retire the side in order while the Royals offense opened the scoring in the bottom half. With the bases loaded and one down Toigo delivered an RBI groundout to put the Royals up 1-0. Derek Sims then ripped a two run single to center to make it 3-0. Two batters later Amari Bartee dropped an RBI single into right field to increase the lead to 4-0.

The Royals then broke open the game in the bottom of the second as they put up the most runs they have all year. After a leadoff single David Rivera ripped an RBI double down the left field line to make it 5-0. Two batters later JJ Cruz came through with an RBI single to left to make it 6-0. Toigo then smashed a grand slam over the centerfield wall for his team leading 8th home run of the season to make it 10-0. With nobody out the Royals continued to hit as they got deep into the Poets bullpen. Ryan Lamastra came through with an RBI single to center to make it 11-0. Bartee then ripped an RBI double down the left field line to make it 12-0. Two batters later Rivera launched a three run shot to left field to make it 15-0. The Royals still weren't done as Cruz unloaded a two run homer down the left field line to give the Royals a commanding 17-0 lead.

Ross would pitch a scoreless top of the third while the Royals added to their lead in the bottom half. The Royals added more runs with two outs as a double play with the bases loaded made it 18-0. Wilson Dunn then ripped an RBI double to right center to make it 19-0. The Poets would get on the board with a sac fly to make it 19-1 in the top of the fourth but the Royals weren't done as Joey Legg smashed his third home run in eight at bats to make it 20-1 in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh Branden Chun-Ming ripped a two run double to right center to make it 22-1. Sims then followed with a two run double to increase the Royals lead to 24-1. The Royals still weren't done as they started the top of the eighth with back to back singles before Nathan Estrada launched a three run home run to left center his first as a Royals to make it 27-1. Chun-Ming then delivered a Royals single game record 28th run on an RBI double to right field to make it 28-1. 

Bear Pinedo, Luke Wallin, Sakemi Sato, Owen Dunn and Noah Stevens combined to pitch the final five innings shutting out the Poets allowing just two hits while walking two and striking out 11. The Royals set a single game record for runs (28), hits (29) and RBIs (27) as they won 28-1.  

The Royals continue action at home as they host No. 7 Jessup for a big GSAC series with a doubleheader beginning at 11:00 AM on Friday, April 12 at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA.
