Seniors Shine As No. 12 Royals Sweep No. 7 Warriors on Senior Day

Fullerton, CA – The No. 12 Hope International University baseball team (30-9, 16-3) extended their modern day record winning streak to 18 games as they upset the No. 7 Jessup University Warriors sweeping a doubleheader 16-5 and 6-4 on Senior day on Friday afternoon at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA. With the sweep the Royals clinch their seventh GSAC series win of the year.

Game 1:
Trey Seeley (7-1) picked up his seventh win pitching 6 innings allowing four runs on six hits while walking four and striking out 9. Derek Sims, David Rivera and Ryan Maciel led the Royals offense with 3 RBIs each.

The game was scoreless until the top of the third when a one out home run put the Warriors up 1-0. Seeley held strong though striking out the next two batters to limit the damage. The Royals offense then jumped all over the Warriors in the bottom half. The Royals would start a one out rally with back to back singles before Rivera smashed a three run bomb to left center to put the Royals on top 3-1. Later with two outs the Royals got another run on a dropped ball at the plate to make it 4-1. Sims would then come up clutch with a single into right field to make it 5-1. The Royals would then add to their lead in the bottom of the fourth as Alex Moreno unloaded a two out RBI double to right center to increases the lead to 6-1.

The Warriors weren't kept off the board for long either as they hit a three run home run with nobody out to make it 6-4 in the top of the fifth. Seeley recovered well though getting back to back strikeouts and then a pop up to limit the damage. The Royals then added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth as Maciel delivered a two out RBI single to make it 7-4. Seeley would then put the Warriors down 1-2-3 in the top of the sixth while the Royals struck again on the long ball as Moreno lined a solo shot over the right field to make it 8-4. Chandler De Jong and Boom Ward would then come in from the bullpen to shut down the Warriors allowing just one hit while walking one and striking out two.

The Royals weren't done scoring either as they broke open the game in the top of the eighth. With runners on the corner and one down JJ Cruz was intentionally walked to load the bases. Alec Arnone would then deliver a sac fly to make it 9-4. The Royals would then add another run on an error before Sims ripped a two run double to center field to make it 12-4. Two batters later Maciel came through with a two run double to left field to make it 14-4. Amari Bartee then crushed his seventh home run of the year, a two run shot to left to give the Royals a commanding 16-4 advantage. The Warriors would pull back a run in the top of the ninth but Aaron Orozco finished the game off with back to back strikeouts as the Royals won 16-5.

Game 2:
Josh Landry (4-1) picked up his fourth win pitching 5 1/3 innings allowing four runs on six hits while walking one and striking out 7. Steven Ordorica picked up his first save of the year pitching 1 2/3 innings allowing just two hits while striking out one. Alex Moreno and Alec Arnone led the Royals offense driving in two runs each.

The Warriors got to Landry early with a leadoff homerun as they once again took the early lead 1-0. Landry would hold strong getting three strikeouts to limit the damage while the Royals tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the second as Derek Sims blasted his second home run of the year. The game wasn't tied for long as the Warriors struck for two more runs in the top of the third to take a 3-1 lead. The Royals weren't down for long though as Arnone launched a one out two run double to left center to tie the game 3-3 in the bottom of the third.

Landry then put the Warriors down in order in the top of the fourth while the Royals offense got back to work in the bottom half. The Royals took advantage of two walk and an error to load the bases from Moreno who came through with a two run single to centerfield to put the Royals up 5-3. Cruz would then rip an RBI double down the right field line just over the glove of the first baseman to increase the Royals lead to 6-3.

Landy continued to hold the Warriors at bay putting them down in order in the top of the fifth but they finally got to him in the top of the sixth as they pulled back a run to make it 6-4. Ordorica then came in from the bullpen and allowed just one hit while working around a single to get a flyout and a groundout to retire the side and keep the Royals ahead. The Warriors continued to fight in the top of the seventh as they got a leadoff single to get the tying run to the plate but Ordorica didn't falter as he got a groundout before striking out the NAIA's best hitter and then a flyout to seal a 6-4 win and seal a big upset sweep on senior day.

The Royals continue their GSAC series at home against No. 7 Jessup with a doubleheader beginning at 11:00 AM on Saturday, April 13 at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA.
