Landry Complete Game Shutout Leads Royals to Sweep of Mustangs

Fullerton, CA – The No. 16 Hope International University baseball team (27-9) extended their modern day record winning streak to 15 games as they swept The Master's University Mustangs winning 6-2 and 4-0 on Saturday afternoon at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA.

Game 1:
Justin Drury (5-0) picked up his fifth win pitching 5 innings allowing one unearned run on five hits while walking one and striking out five. Dean Toigo led the Royals offense going 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs.

The Mustangs broke through in the top of the first as they took advantage of back to back singles, an error and a groundout to take a 1-0 lead with one out. Drury then limited the damage getting a popout and a strikeout to end the inning. The Royals meanwhile were held hittless until one out in the bottom of the third when Amari Bartee crushed the first pitch he saw over the right field wall to tie the game 1-1. The Royals then took advantage of an error to extend the inning as Alex Moreno followed with a two out RBI double to put the Royals up 2-1. Moreno would then score on a wild pitch to make it 3-1. JJ Cruz then crushed what looked like a two run home run but the umpire signaled a foul ball as the game continued 3-1.

The Royals wouldn't need those runs as Drury shutdown the Mustangs putting them down in order in the top of the fourth and working around a hit batter to retire the side in the top of the fifth. The Mustangs did finally threaten in the top of the sixth as they loaded the bases with nobody out. Aaron Orozco then came in in relief and got two huge strikeouts on two full counts and then a popup to retire the side and keep the game 3-1. Chandler DeJong would then pitch two innings allowing just one hit while striking out one.

The Royals then added some insurance in the bottom of the eighth as Toigo dropped a two run single into centerfield to make it 5-1. Mario Tostado then came through with a sun aided double to increase the Royals lead to 6-1. The Mustangs tried to rally in the top of the ninth with a two out home run but Boom Ward held strong striking out the final batter to seal a 6-2 win.

Game 2:
Josh Landry (3-1) picked up his third win as he threw a complete game 7 inning shutout allowing just two hits while walking one and striking out 13. JJ Cruz led the offense going 1-for-2 with 2 RBIs.

Landry got things started for the Royals as he struckout the entire Mustangs lineup in order over the first three innings. The Royals offense meanwhile got some early run support for Landry in the bottom of the first as David Rivera led off with a single and Alex Moreno followed with a double to put runners on second and third and nobody out. Cruz and Alec Arnone would then follow with back to back RBI groundouts to put the Royals up 2-0.

The Mustangs would finally get two hits off Landry in the top of the fourth but he was not fazed as he got a flyout to end the inning and keep the Mustangs off the board. The Royals would then add a run on a balk in the bottom of the fourth and a sun aided double by Cruz with two outs in the bottom of the fifth to increase the Royals lead to 4-0. Landry meanwhile continued to deal putting the Mustangs down in order in the top of the fifth and top of the sixth innings. The Mustangs tried to rally as they got a one out walk in the top of the seventh but Landry picked off the runner and then induced a flyout to secure his first complete game shutout as a Royal.

The Royals continue action at home as they host NCAA Division II Whittier on Tuesday, April 9 at 6:00 PM at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA.
