Puente Strikes out 20 to Lead Royals in Sweep of Oaks

Atherton, CA – The No. 12 Hope International University softball team (30-7, 8-4 GSAC) have now won eight games in a row as they swept a doubleheader against the Menlo College Oaks winning 6-0 and 2-1 in 8 innings on Friday afternoon on the road in Atherton, CA..

Game 1:
Allie Puente (19-6) picked up the win throwing a complete game 7 inning shutout allowing just four hits while walking two and striking out 10. Asia Chacon and Emma McCraw led the offense going driving in two runs each.

The Royals jumped on top in the first inning as Chacon led off with a triple and then put the Royals up 1-0 on an RBI single by Jazzy Smith. McCraw then ripped an RBI single to left to increase the Royals lead to 2-0. That's all the run support Puente needed as she put the first six Oaks she faced down in order. The Oaks did threaten in the bottom of the fifth with a runner on second and nobody out but Puente came right back to strikeout the next three batters to keep the Oaks off the board.

The Royals then added to their lead in the top of the sixth as they loaded the bases with nobody out. Chacon then ripped a two run double off the bottom of the left field wall to increase the Royals lead to 4-0. Sarah Reisler then delivered a sac fly to put the Royals up 5-0. The Royals weren't done as two batters later McCraw lined an RBI single up the middle to make it 6-0. Puente then worked around a single in the sixth and a walk in the seventh to retire the Oaks and seal the win.

Game 2:
Grace Craig got the start and pitched 4 innings allowing one unearned run on seven hits. Allie Puente (20-6) picked up the win in relief pitching the final four innings allowing one hit while striking out 10. Jazzy Smith led the offense going 1-for-3 with one RBI.

It was a pitcher's duel throughout as the game was scoreless until the Oaks took advantage of an error in the bottom of the third to take a 1-0 lead. The Royals were held scoreless through the first four innings but finally got on the board in the top of the fifth as Kaylee Vasquez led off with an infield single. Ariana Coronado then got the runner to second before Natalie Corrales drove in the tying run on an error to make it 1-1.

The Oaks looked to retake the lead in the bottom of the fifth as they led off with a single but Puente then came in in relief to get three strikeouts to keep the game 1-1. The Royals looked to take the lead but were unable to do so in regulation as the game headed to extra innings. The Royals played the top of the eighth perfectly as they bunted the runner over to third before Smith delivered a sac fly to put the Royals up 2-1. The Oaks didn't give up easily as they loaded the bases with one out but Puente held strong getting a strikeout, forceout and a strikeout to secure the win.

The Royals continue GSAC action on the road as they travel to Rocklin, CA for huge GSAC matchup and No. 7 Jessup with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 6 beginning at 12:00 PM.
