No. 14 Royals Knock Off Spirit and Upset Top Seeded No. 7 Warriors

Irvine, CA - The No. 14 Hope International University softball team (35-14) stayed alive in the GSAC Tournament as they edged out the OUAZ Spirit 1-0 before upsetting the top seeded No. 7 Warriors 10-4 beating them for the first time this season on Tuesday evening at the OC Great Park in Irvine, CA.

Game 1:
Allie Puente (24-11) picked up the win tossing a complete game 7 inning three hitter while walking three and striking out 9. Kassie Puente led the Royals offense going 1-for-2 with an RBI.

The Royals almost took an early lead off their first hitter of the game but Sarah Reisler was thrown out at the plate trying to stretch a leadoff triple into an inside the park home run in the bottom of the first. The Royals would take the lead in the bottom of the second as Jazzy Smith got things started with a one out double before an error advanced her to third. Kassie Puente then came through with a huge two out RBI single to put the Royals up 1-0.

The Spirit tried to fight back as they put the tying run in scoring position in the top of the third and fifth innings but Allie held strong holding the Spirit off the board. The Royals tried to add some insurance runs late in the game but were unable to do so. It didn't matter though as Allie retired the final seven Spirit batters she faced to seal a 1-0 win for the Royals

Game 2:
Grace Craig got the start and pitched 2/3 of an inning allowing two runs on two hits while walking one and striking out two. Allie Puente (25-11) picked up the win in relief pitching 6 1/3 innings allowing two runs on four hits while walking four and striking out 7. Asia Chacon led the Royals offense going 3-for-5 with 3 RBIs.

Things did not start well for the Royals in the elimination game as they fell behind 3-0 after two innings. The Royals quickly got to work in the top of the third as Samantha Villanueva unloaded a one out RBI double to right to make it 3-1. Allie Puente who had come in in relief shutdown the Warriors in the bottom of the third while the Royals offense exploded in the top of the fourth. The Royals would start the innings with four straight singles as Ariana Coronado made it 3-2. Chacon then stepped to the plate and ripped a bases clearing double down the left field line to put the Royals on top 5-3. Villanueva then made it 6-3 on a fielder's choice before an RBI single by Natalie Corrales stretched the Royals lead to 7-3.

The Warriors tried to answer in the bottom of the fourth after getting two walks but Allie held strong getting a huge strikeout looking to end the threat. Then after setting the Warriors down in order in the bottom of the fifth the Royals offense got back to work in the top of the sixth. Emma McCraw led things off with a triple and would come home on another triple Jazzy Smith to make it 8-3. Ariana Coronado then forced an error to increase the Royals lead to 9-3.

The top seeded Warriors didn't give up as they made it 9-4 on a bases loaded single with two outs in the bottom of the sixth. That's all Allie would allow as she got one of the Warriors best hitters to pop up and end the threat. The Royals would then get the run back in the top of the seventh as McCraw forced in a run on an error to increase the Royals lead to 10-4. Allie then put the Warriors down in order in the bottom of the seventh as the Royals knocked off the Warriors for the first time all season putting up a season high 18 hits in the win.

The Royals will now take on the Vanguard University Lions on Wednesday May 1, at 12:00 PM at the OC Great Park Softball Stadium in Irvine, CA. If they win they will face the Lions again at 3:00 PM.
