Royals Can't Hold Early Lead Fall 11-8 to No. 12 Warriors

Irvine, CA – The No. 8 Hope International University baseball team (36-13) couldn't hold on to the early lead as they fell 11-8 to the No. 12 Jessup University Warriors in their second GSAC Tournament game on Tuesday afternoon at the OC Great Park Baseball Stadium in Irvine, CA..

Josh Landry (5-2) took the loss pitching 4 2/3 innings allowing eight runs, six earned on eight hits while walking five and striking out five. Alex Moreno led the offense going 2-for-5 with two RBIs.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third as David Rivera got things started with a one out single. Moreno then followed with an RBI triple down the right field line to put the Royals up 1-0. JJ Cruz then delivered a sac fly to increase the lead to 2-0. The Warriors battled back in the top of the fourth as they scored five runs to take a 5-2 lead.

The Royals looked to pick up Landry in the bottom of the fourth as they got things started with a single and a double. Ryan Lamastra then ripped an RBI single to right field to make it 5-3. Amari Bartee then cut the Warriors lead to 5-4 on an RBI single to left. Two batters later Rivera delivered a sac fly to tie the game 5-5. The Royals weren't done yet as Moreno put the Royals back ahead 6-5 with an RBI single to center. The lead wouldn't last long though as the Warriors took advantage of an error before scoring three runs in the top of the fifth to go back up 8-6.

Sakemi Sato shutdown the Warriors in the top of the sixth putting them down in order while the Royals offense looked to come from behind again. The Warriors had other ideas though as they put up two runs in the top of the seventh and one in the top of the ninth to extend their lead to 11-6. The Royals didn't give up as Ryan Maciel came through with a two out RBI single to pull the Royals within 11-8. The Royals then brought the tying run to the plate but were unable to cash in as they fell 11-8.

The Royals continue GSAC Tournament play as they take on the winner of Arizona Christian and OUAZ on Wednesday, May 1 at 10:00 AM at the OC Great Park Baseball Stadium in Irvine, CA.
