Drury Shines as No. 12 Royals Defeat Lions For 8th GSAC Series Win

Costa Mesa, CA – The No. 12 Hope International University baseball team (35-11, 19-4 GSAC) won their eighth GSAC series and last of the season as they swept a doubleheader against the Vanguard University Lions winning their final conference game 10-3 before taking the non conference game 2-1 on Saturday afternoon on the road in Costa Mesa, CA.

Game 1:
Justin Drury (7-0) picked up his seventh victory of the season in eight starts pitching 6 innings allowing one run on three hits while walking three and striking out five. Dean Toigo led the offense going 3-for-5 with 4 RBIs.

The Royals jumped on top in the top of the first as they loaded the bases with nobody out. Alec Arnone would drive in a run on fielder's choice to put the Royals up 1-0. Toigo then crushed his 10th home run of the year, a three run bomb to right center to increase the Royals lead to 4-0. Drury then pitched a scoreless bottom of the first striking out the Lions in order while the Royals offense added to their lead in the bottom half. The Royals took advantage of two errors to put runner on the corners with nobody out. David Rivera then delivered a sac fly to increase the Royals lead to 5-0. Arnone would then force another error to score two more runs as the Royals took a commanding 7-0 lead.

That's all the run support Drury would need as he continued to shutdown the Lions working out of trouble in the bottom of the second as they loaded the bases with one out. Drury recovered nicely getting a strikeout and flyout to end the threat. Drury then put the Lions down in order in the bottom of the third while Toigo came through with a one out RBI single to make it 8-0. The Lions then threatened again in the bottom of the sixth as they loaded the bases with one out. Once again Drury held strong allowing just one run on a sac fly and then getting a pop out in foul territory to end the inning.

The Royals would add to their lead in the top of the seventh as Branden Chun-Ming crushed a two out solo to left field to increase the Royals lead to 9-1. Owen Dunn then came in from the bullpen to pitch a scoreless top of the seventh getting two strikeouts. The Royals weren't done scoring as JJ Cruz launched his team leading 11th home run of the year to right field to increase the Royals lead to 10-1. The Lions would get two runs in the bottom of the eighth to make it 10-3 but that's all the Royals would allow as Dunn got two outs in the ninth before Sakemi Sato came in to get a strikeout to seal the victory and the series win.

Game 2:
David Rudd-Grow (1-1) picked up his first win of the season turning in his best performance of the year pitching 5 innings allowing one run on three hits while striking out six. Boom Ward picked up his first save on the season pitching 2/3 of an inning while striking out one. Dean Toigo led the Royals offense going 1-for-3 with two RBIs.

A surprising pitcher's duel emerged as both teams turned to their bullpens for the fourth and final game of the weekend. Rudd Grow put the first seven Lions he faced down in order as held them off the board over the first three innings. The Royals would finally break through in the top of the fourth as it was Toigo who came through again blasting his 11th home run of the year, a two run shot to put the Royals up 2-0.

The Lions would answer with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the fourth to make it 2-1 but Rudd-Grow bounced back retiring the Lions in order to keep the Royals lead intact. The Lions tried to rally in the bottom of the fifth as they put the tying run in scoring position but again Rudd-Grow was unfazed getting a flyout and a strikeout to end the threat. Chandler De Jong would then pitch 1 1/3 innings in relief allowing just one hit while striking out three and stranding the tying run at third in the bottom of the sixth. The Lions would have one last chance in the bottom of the seventh but the Royals would shut them down in order as Ward came in to get the final two outs and seal a 2-1 win.

The Royals wrap up regular season play on the road as they head to Santa Barbara, CA to take on NCAA Division II Westmont on Tuesday, April 23 at 3:00 PM.
