Royals Wrap Up Regular Season With 6-3 Loss to DII Westmont

Santa Barbara, CA – The No. 12 Hope International University baseball team (35-12) fell 6-3 to the NCAA Division II Westmont College Warriors as they wrapped up regular season play on Tuesday afternoon in Santa Barbara, CA.

With the GSAC Tournament on the horizon the Royals mixed things up as Trey Seeley got the start and pitched one no hit inning while striking out two. Gio Besio took the loss in relief pitching 2/3 of an inning allowing one run on one hit while walking two and striking out one. David Rivera led the offense going 3-for-5 with an RBI.

The game was scoreless through two innings until the Warriors took the lead on a wild pitch to make it 1-0. The Warriors then added to their lead with runs in the bottom of the third and fourth innings as the Royals trailed 4-0. The Royals finally rallied in the top of the fifth as Ryan Lamastra ripped an RBI down the left field line to make it 4-1. Rivera then delivered a clutch two out RBI single up the middle to pull the Royals within 4-2. Bear Pinedo shutdown the Warriors in the bottom of the fifth while the Royals continued to rally in the top of the sixth.

The Royals would load the bases with one out and forced in a run on a bases loaded walk to Derek Sims to make it 4-3. That's all they got though as they continued to trail. Sakemi Sato pitched a scoreless bottom of the sixth while the Royals looked to comeback in the top of the seventh as they loaded the bases with nobody out. Once again the Warriors bullpen was to much as the Royals were unable to convert. The Warriors tacked on three more runs over the final innings as the Royals fell 6-3.

The Royals continue play at the GSAC Tournament where they will take on the winner of OUAZ and Vanguard on Monday, April 29 at 6:00 PM at the OC Great Park Baseball Stadium in Irvine, CA.
