Landry's Strong Performance Leads No. 12 Royals to Split With Lions

Costa Mesa, CA – The No. 12 Hope International University baseball team (33-11, 18-4 GSAC) split their GSAC doubleheader with the Vanguard University Lions falling 8-6 in game one before winning 5-1 in game two on Friday afternoon on the road in Costa Mesa, CA.

Game 1:
Trey Seeley (7-3) took his first loss in over a month pitching 6 innings allowing six runs, seven earned on eight hits while walking two and striking out three. Alec Arnone led the offense going 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the second when Seeley ran into trouble as the Lions took advantage of an error to score two runs and take a 2-0 lead. The Lions would then strike for two more runs each in the bottom of the third and fourth innings as the Royals trailed 6-0. The Royals then rallied putting runners on second and third with two outs in the top of the fifth. Alec Arnone then ripped a two run single to left field to pull the Royals within 6-2.

The Lions would answer with a run in the bottom of the sixth to increase their lead to 7-2. The Royals continued to rally in the top of the seventh as Arnone came through with his third RBI of the game on a two out RBI single to make it 7-3. The Royals then struck again with two outs in the top of the eighth as Amari Bartee crushed his eighth home run of the year to pull the Royals within 7-5.

The Lions would answer again in the bottom of the eighth to increase their lead to 8-5. The Royals weren't done either as they tried to comeback in the top of the ninth as David Rivera hit a leadoff double. The Royals were only able to get one run off a fielder's choice by Derek Sims as they fell 8-6.

Game 2:
Josh Landry (5-1) picked up his fifth win pitching 5 1/3 innings allowing one run on four hits while walking two and striking out 10. Steven Ordorica picked up his second save pitching 1 1/3 no hit innings while walking one and striking out one. Dean Toigo led the Royals offense going 1-for-3 with two RBIs.

Landry put the Lions down in order in the bottom of the first and then worked around a walk and a single in the bottom of the second getting a strikeout and a groundout to end the inning. The Lions would continue fighting as they loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the sixth but Ordorica came in from the bullpen to get a groundout to end the threat. He then worked around a walk in the bottom of the seventh to retire the Lions and seal the win.
