Arnone Helps Lead Royals to GSAC Series Win Over Firestorm

Fullerton, CA – The No. 11 Hope International University baseball team (13-9, 6-3 GSAC) won their third GSAC series in a row as they won the deciding game 8-4 on Saturday afternoon at home at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA.

Justin Drury (2-0) picked up his second win of the season throwing a one hit shutout over 5 innings while striking out four. Ryan Maciel led the Royals offense going 1-for-1 with a three run home run.

It was a pitcher's battle early on as Drury put away the first four Firestorm hitters he faced until allowing one hit, but that didn't faze him as he got a fly out and a caught stealing to end the inning. The Royals offense continued to struggle at the plate while Drury put the Firestorm down in order in the third and fourth innings to keep the game scoreless. The Royals would finally get on the board in the bottom of the fourth as Dean Toigo got things started with a one out double. The Royals then loaded the bases and would push across a run on a sac fly by Branden Chun-Ming to take a 1-0 lead.

Drury continued to cruise as he put the Firestorm down in order again for the third straight inning while the Royals added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth with a big home run from David Rivera to make it 2-0. The Firestorm looked to answer in the top of the sixth but Bear Pinedo and Boom Ward continued to shutdown the Firestorm. The Royals then struck again in the bottom of the seventh as a single, walk and an error loaded the bases. JJ Cruz then forced in a run on a hit by pitch to make it 3-0. The Royals then scored two more runs on a fielder's choice by Alec Arnone to take a 5-0 lead.

The Firestorm finally got to the Royals pitching in the top of the eighth as they loaded the bases with nobody out and would score four runs to make it 5-4 but Steven Ordorica who had come in from the bullpen got a groundout to limit the damage and keep the Royals lead intact. The Royals then got some insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth as Maciel crushed a pinch hit three run home run to increase the Royals lead to 8-4. Ordorica then worked his way around an error to retire the Firestorm and seal an 8-4 win.

The Royals continue action at home with a potential game on Tuesday but they will play Westcliff on Friday, March 15 at 2:00 PM at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA.
