Seeley Gem Leads Royals in Doubleheader Split With Firestorm

Fullerton, CA – The No. 11 Hope International University baseball team (12-9, 5-3 GSAC) split their GSAC doubleheader against the Arizona Christian Firestorm as they won the first game in a 4-0 shutout before falling 5-2 in the second game on Friday evening at home at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA.

Game 1:
Trey Seeley (2-2) picked up the win throwing a two hit shutout over 6 innings while walking one and striking out 8. JJ Cruz led the Royals offense going 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs and a home run.

Seeley worked around a one out hit in the first as he got a strikeout and a flyout to end the threat. The Royals then took the lead in the bottom of the first as they took advantage of an error and a sun aided hit to load the bases. Dean Toigo then delivered a sac fly in his first game back from injury to give the Royals a 1-0 lead. Seeley then got back to work shutting down the Firestorm over the next two innings while the Royals added to their lead in the bottom of the third. Alex Moreno would lead things off with a double before Cruz brought him home by crushing a two run home run over the right field wall to increase the Royals lead to 3-0.

Seeley continued to dazzle as he put the Firestorm in order in the top of the fourth and top of the fifth. The Royals then added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth as Alec Arnone came through with a clutch two out RBI single through the left side to make it 4-0. Seeley then worked out of a jam as the Firestorm loaded the bases in the top of the sixth but he held strong as he struckout the final hitter to keep the Royals lead at 4-0. Sakemi Sato, Chandler DeJong and Steven Ordorica then came in from the bullpen and combined for three shutout innings while allowing just two hits as they sealed a 4-0 shutout win for the Royals first shutout of the season.

Game 2:
Josh Landry (1-1) got the start and took the loss pitching 5 innings allowing four runs, two earned on three hits while walking two and striking out 8. Toigo led the Royals offense going 1-for-3 with 2 RBIs.

The Firestorm got to Landry early as they took advantage of an error to take a 1-0 lead. The Royals weren't down for long as they struck back in the bottom of the first. With runners on second and third and two down Toigo came through with a clutch two run single to put the Royals up 2-1. Landry would settle in from there as he shutdown the Firestorm over the next three innings putting down 10 straight hitters. Things would unravel from there as the Firestorm took advantage of a walk and wild pitch as they would score three runs to take a 4-2 lead. Landry would then get a big strikeout to end the inning.

The Royals looked to fight back in the bottom of the fifth as David Rivera launched a one out double but the Royals were unable to take advantage as they continued to trail 4-2. The Firestorm then added to their lead with a run in the top of the seventh to make it 5-2. The Royals looked to answer in the bottom of the seventh but were unable to generate any offense as they fell 5-2 for the doubleheader split.

The Royals continue GSAC action at home as they wrap up their series against Arizona Christian on Saturday, March 9th at 12:00 PM PT at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA.
