Moreno Leads Royals to 12-2 Win Over Division II Warriors

Santa Barbara, CA – The No. 11 Hope International University baseball team (11-8) got a big win on the road as they took down the NAIA defending Champion and now Division II Westmont College Warriors 10-2 on Tuesday afternoon on the road in Santa Barbara, CA.

Justin Drury got the start and was flawless pitching three no hit innings while striking out four. Bear Pinedo (1-1) picked up the win in relief pitching one inning while allowing no hits and walking two. Alex Moreno led the Royals offense going 2-for-3 with 4 RBIs.

It was a pitchers duel from the start as Drury kept the Warriors at bay over the first three innings as he put them down in order in the first two before working around an error to keep the game scoreless. The Royals offense was also held hitless over the first three innings but had a chance to score in the top of the third. The Royals took advantage of walks and an error to load the bases with one but were unable to breakthrough as the game remained scoreless.

Pinedo then came into pitch a scoreless fourth working his way around a pair of walks to keep the Warriors off the board. The Royals offense broke through in the top of the fifth as Branden Chun-Ming got the Royals first hit. Later with runners on second and third with one down Rivera launched a two run double off the centerfield wall to give the Royals a 2-0 lead. Alex Moreno then traded places with Rivera as he ripped an RBI double to right center to put the Royals up 3-0.

The Warriors didn't give up as they got two runs back in the bottom of the sixth to make it 3-2 while still having two on and one out. Aaron Orozco then came in from the bullpen and limited the damage getting a strikeout and a flyout to end the threat. The Royals offense then broke open the game in the top of the seventh. With runners on second and third and one down Moreno delivered an RBI infield single to increase the Royals lead to 4-2. JJ Cruz then delivered an RBI single through the right side to make it 5-2. Moreno then would score on a wild pitch before Mario Tostado ripped a two run single to right to make it 8-2.

The Warriors looked to answer in the bottom of the seventh as they put runners on the corners with nobody out but Chander DeJong cameback to strikeout the next two batters before getting a groundout to keep the Warriors at bay. The Royals then struck for two more runs in the top of the eighth. With runners on the corners and nobody out Moreno came through with a sac fly to make it 9-2 before Alec Arnone delivered an RBI single up the middle as the Royals took a commanding 10-2 lead. Boom Ward came into pitch a scoreless bottom of the eighth while the Royals struck again in the ninth with the bases loaded. Rivera made it 11-2 on an RBI single before an RBI groundout by Moreno increased the Royals lead to 12-2. Steven Ordorica then came in to pitch a scoreless ninth as the Royals won 10-2.

The Royals continue GSAC action at home with a doubleheader against Arizona Christian on Friday, March 8 beginning at 3:00 PM at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA.
