Royals Can't Overcome No. 3 Lions in 3-1 Defeat

Costa Mesa, CA – The Hope International men's volleyball team (4-8, 0-3 GSAC) battled hard but fell 3-1 on the road to the No. 3 Vanguard University Lions on Saturday evening in Costa Mesa, CA.

The Lions took the early lead but the Royals kept it close as they trailed 8-7. The Lions would slowly pull away to take an 18-15 lead but the Royals came to life with a 4-0 run with kills from Kyler Tufuga and Coby Prowse to take a 19-18 lead. The Royals continued to lead 23-21 off a kill by Prowse but the Lions answered to take a 26-25 lead. The Royals fought to stay alive with back to back kills from Tufuga and Prowse to retake a 27-26 lead but again the Lions answered as they went up 28-27. This time the Royals closed it out on a 3-0 run with back to back service aces from Sergio Garcia to win 30-28 and take a 1-0 lead. The Lions once again took the early lead in the second set but the Royals kept it close as a kill by Brian Castro tied it 8-8. The Lions would pull back out to take the lead but Castro made it close with another kill as the Royals trailed 16-15. The Royals kept fighting but the Lions closed out the set winning 25-19 and tying the game 1-1.

The Lions continued their momentum into the third set as they started on a 4-1 run before going on to take a 13-7 lead. The Royals battled back to get within 18-14 off back to back kills from Castro and Prowse but the Lions had all the answers as they went on to win 25-19 and take a 2-1 lead. The Royals fought to tie the game in the fourth set as they took an early 7-6 lead off a kill by Prowse. The Lions answered to go up 11-7 but the Royals battled back to tie it 15-15 off kills from Prowse and Tufuga. The Lions once again answered to go up 23-18 but the Royals didn't give up as they went on a 4-1 run as Garcia set up Julian Zavala for a big kill to make it 24-22. The Lions though closed out the game on the next play as the Royals fell 25-22 and 3-1. Tufuga led the Royals with 15 kills.

The Royals continue GSAC play at home as they host Arizona Christian on Friday, March 8 at 6:00 PM in the Darling Pavilion in Fullerton, CA
