Royals Split With Eagles and Thunderbirds

Fullerton, CA – The No. 11 Hope International University baseball team (5-3) split another doubleheader as they took down the Embry-Riddle (AZ) Eagles 9-2 in game one before falling 7-3 to the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds on Friday at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA.

Game 1:
Chaz McWilliams got the start and pitched three innings allowing two runs on one hit while walking three and striking out six. Justin Drury (1-0) picked up the win in relief allowing just one hit over two innings pitched with walking one and striking out three. J.J. Cruz led the Royals offense going 3-for-5 with 4 RBIs.

McWilliams put the Eagles down in order to start the game while the Royals opened the scoring in the bottom half. With two on and one out Alec Arnone crushed a double off the top of the centerfield wall to put the Royals up 1-0. McWilliams then worked around a walk by striking out the side in the top of the second while the Royals offense continued to click. With the bases loaded and two down Cruz delivered with a two run double to increase the Royals lead to 3-0.

The Eagles struck back in the top of the third to make it 3-2 but a sac fly by David Rivera in the bottom of the four increased the Royals lead to 4-2. Meanwhile Drury came in from the bullpen and shutdown the Eagles over the next two innings. The Royals then broke open the game in the bottom of the sixth. After back to back singles and a wild pitch Cruz ripped a two run double to right to bring home both runners and push the Royals lead to 6-2. Arnone then delivered an RBI single to make it 7-2. Arnone would then score later in the inning to increase the Royals advantage to 8-2.

Boom Ward and Chandler De Jong would come in from the bullpen and shutdown the Eagles while the Royals pushed across another run in the bottom of the eighth on a two out RBI double to increase their lead to 9-2. Gio Besio then came in to pitch the ninth and worked his way out of trouble to seal a 9-2 victory for the Royals.

Game 2:
Trey Seeley (1-1) took the loss pitching 5 innings allowing four runs on four hits while walking three and striking out eight. Arnone led the Royals offense going 1-for-3 with an RBI

Seeley put the Thunderbirds down in order to start the game but then ran into trouble as they got a run in the second and the third to take a 2-0 lead. The Royals quickly answered in the bottom of the third as Amari Bartee crushed a one out solo shot to make it 2-1. The Thunderbirds would strike again in the top of the fourth as they extended their lead to 3-1. The Royals didn't let up as Arnone launched a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the fourth to make it 3-2. Once again the Thuderbirds reextended their lead to 4-2 in the top of the fifth.

The Royals didn't give up as they looked to rally in the bottom half with the bases loaded and one out. They were unable to cash in as Cruz lined into a double play to end the inning. The Thunderbirds then added to their lead with a run in the next three innings as they took a 7-2 lead in the ninth. The Royals looked to rally one last time as Ryan Lamastra came through with a pinch hit RBI single to make it 7-3 but that's all the Royals would get as they fell 7-3.
