Fullerton, CA – The No. 11 Hope International University baseball team (6-4) split another doubleheader as they took down the Embry-Riddle (AZ) Eagles 16-5 in game one before falling 9-7 in 14 innings to the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds on Saturday at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA.

Game 1:

The Eagles got to Ross early as they took a a 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the second. The Royals quickly answered as they took advantage of a pair of errors and a wild pitch to make it 2-1. Seth Nelson would then follow with a sac fly to tie it 2-2. Amari Bartee then ripped a double off the top of the wall to give the Royals a 3-2 lead. The Eagles quickly answered with two runs in the top of the third to go up 4-3. The Royals weren't to be denied either as David Rivera got the bottom of the third started with a double. Back to back singles followed with Mario Tostado tying the game 4-4. Two batters later Branden Chun-Ming delivered an RBI single to put the Royals up 5-4. Nelson then followed with a two run single up the middle to make it 7-4 and then would score later on an error as the Royals took an 8-4 lead.

Dunn then came in from the bullpen and put the Eagles down in order in the top of the fourth before the Royals added their lead in the bottom half. Rivera launched a solo shot to make it 9-4 and then the Royals would add another on an error as they took a 10-4 lead. Dunn then pitched a scoreless fourth working his way around a single while striking out the side. The Royals offense then kept piling on in the bottom of the fifth. Nelson crushed a two run bomb over the right field wall to get things started as the Royals extended their lead to 12-4. Two batters later Alex Moreno connected on a solo shot to make it 13-4. Later in the inning Tostado ripped a two run double down the right field line to make it 15-4. Bartee then unloaded a solo home run to right center in the bottom of the sixth to make it 16-4.

That didn't last long as the Royals loaded the bases with two out. Cruz then ripped a two run double off the top of the wall to put the Royals up 3-2.

The score would remain that way as Steven Ordorica came into the game and shutdown the Eagles through three innings until he ran into trouble in the ninth. The Royals put the Thunderbirds down to their final strike but they came through to take a 4-3 lead. The Royals weren't about to go down easily as they put runners on second and third with nobody out and tied the game 4-4 on an RBI groundout by Alex Moreno to send the game to extra innings.

The Thunderbirds retook the lead in extras as they put up a three spot in the top of the tenth to take a 7-4 lead. The Royals didn't give up either as they loaded the bases with one out. Chun-Ming then ripped a two run double down the left field line to make it 7-6. An intentional walk followed and then Moreno worked a four pitch walk to tie the game 7-7. Neither team could score from there as the game remained tied until the 14th. The Thunderbirds would strike again on the longball to take a 9-7 lead.
