Royals Falter Late Against No. 10 Lions in Overtime

Newport Beach, CA - The Hope International University women's basketball team (13-6, 5-4 GSAC) couldn't hold onto a late lead as they fell 81-73 in OT to the Vanguard University Lions on Saturday evening at Corona Del Mar High School in Newport Beach, CA. 

It was a back and forth start to the game as the teams exchanged leads with Shiane Talley nailing a three to put the Royals up 11-9 midway through the quarter. The Lions seized the momentum as they closed the quarter on a 13-3 run to take a 22-14 lead at the end of the first. The Royals quickly got back in the game as they started on a 5-0 run with a three from Shailissa Jarrett making it 22-19 but the Lions answered as they extended their lead to 27-19 with 6:27 to go. Talley answered with a three to start a 7-0 run as the Royals pulled within 27-26 but once again the Lions answered to make it 31-26. The Royals would have the final say as Talley pulled down some big rebounds and scored a late layup to pull the Royals within 31-28 at halftime.

The Royals came out of halftime fired up and outscored the Lions 8-4 to retake a 36-35 lead midway through the third on a pair of free throws by Casey Fust. It was a defensive battle from there as they Lions came back to take the lead 42-41 at the end of the third. The Royals started the fourth strong as Talley and Anyah Shamburger hit back to back threes to put the Royals up 47-42. The Lions came back to take a 51-50 lead but the Royals responded on an 8-1 run finished off by a three from Jarret to take a 58-52 lead with 4:00 to go. Shamburger would nail another three to put the Royals up 64-58 with 1:42 remaining but the Lions came back to make it 64-61 with :19 seconds to go. The Royals were then unable to finish off the game from the line while the Lions hit a three from deep to tie the game 64-64 at the buzzer and send it to overtime.

The teams exchanged leads to start overtime with the Royals taking a 68-67 lead on a layup by Talley. The Lions would come back to take a 72-68 lead but the Royals kept it close as Shamburger laid it in to make it 72-70 with 2:28 remaining. It was all Lions from there as they closed out overtime on a 9-3 run as the Royals fell 81-73 in overtime. Talley led the Royals with 25 points.

The Royals continue GSAC action on the road as they travel to Northern California to take on Jessup on Thursday, February 8 at 5:30 PM in Rocklin, CA.
