Chacon Leads Royals to 4-0 Win Over DIII Athenas

Claremont, CA – The No. 19 Hope International University softball team (6-1) shutout the NCAA Division III Claremont Mudd-Scripps Athenas 4-0 on Saturday afternoon on the road in Claremont, CA.

Allie Puente (4-1) picked up the win as she threw a three hitter over seven innings while walking one and striking out three. Asia Chacon led the Royals offense going 3-for-4 with two RBIs.

The Royals threatened in the top of the first but were unable to score. Meanwhile Allie worked around a leadoff walk as she put down the next three batters 1-2-3 while striking out two. The Royals offense then broke through in the top of the third as Samanth Villanueva got things started by ripping a triple to deep center field. Chacon then lined an RBI single to left to make it 1-0. Two batters later Katrina Rodriguez delivered an RBI groundout to push the Royals lead to 2-0.

The Athenas looked to answer in the bottom of the third as they led things off with a single but once again Allie shut them down as she got two outs before her sister Kassie Puente gunned down the runner trying to steal to end the inning. The Royals then added to their lead in the fourth as Chacon and Emma McCraw came through with back to back two out RBI single to increase the Royals advantage to 4-0.

After allowing a hit in the bottom of the fourth Allie would put down the next eleven Athena batters before they finally got a double in the bottom of the seventh with two down as they looked to score. Allie wasn't perturbed though as she got the final Athena batter to fly out as the Royals won 4-0.

The Royals continue action on the road as as they travel to Arizona for a six game stretch with action starting on Thursday, February 8 with a doubleheader beginning at 9:00 AM against Park-Gilbert in Gilbert, AZ.
