Ramirez and Sii Help Lead Royals to 75-70 OT Win Over Lions

Newport Beach, CA - The Hope International University men's basketball team (16-7, 5-4 GSAC) got a much needed road win as they took down the Vanguard University Lions 75-70 in overtime on Thursday evening at Corona Del Mar High School in Newport Beach, CA.

The teams exchanged leads to start the game with a Tristan Williams layup putting the Royals up 10-9 with 15:22 left. The Lions would tie it up 11-11 but the Royals went on a 12-1 run led by five points from Gaven Ramirez to take control with a 23-12 lead midway through the half. The Lions clawed their way back to 25-18 but a Williams three started an 8-2 run as the Royals took a 33-20 lead with 4:28 remaining. The Lions didn't give in as they battled back on a 10-2 run to pull within 35-30 at halftime. 

The Lions stormed back on an 8-0 run to take a 38-35 lead just four minutes into the second half. The Royals answered on a 7-2 run with a big three from Caleb Christopher putting them up 42-40 with 15:01 remaining. From there the teams exchanged baskets with a three from Jozelle Carter Jr putting the Royals up 59-56 with 4:20 left. The Lions instantly answered to tie it as the game continued to see-saw back and forth. The Lions would then take a 65-63 lead with :07 seconds left but the Royals answered as Grant Sii was fouled with 0.8 seconds left and went to the line knocking down both free throws and sending the game to overtime with the score 65-65.

The Lions took the lead to start overtime but the Royals came back to take the lead on a Williams fast break layup to make it 69-67 with 2:14 to go. The Lions got back within one but Ramirez answered with a layup to make it 71-68. The Lions would make it 71-70 but the Royal's defense then stepped up and held strong while Carter Jr and Williams hit all their free throws to send the Royals to a 75-70 win. Ramirez led with 20 points while Sii added 14 off the bench.
   
The Royals continue GSAC action on the road as they travel to Northern California to take on Jessup on Thursday, February 8 at 7:30 PM in Rocklin, CA.
