Royals Split With No. 15 Gyrenes and No. 6 Bulldogs

Glendale, AZ – The No. 11 Hope International University baseball team (4-2) split their final day at the NAIA Ball East West Challenge as they took down the No. 15 Ave Maria University Gyrenes 10-5 before falling late to the No. 6 Tennessee Wesleyan University Bulldogs 15-8 on Saturday at Greenway High School in Glendale, AZ. 

Game 1:
Trey Seeley (1-0) picked up his first win of the season as he pitched 5 innings allowing one run on three hits while walking one and striking out two. The Royals offense was led by Branden Chun-Ming who hit a three run home run.

Seeley got things started for the Royals in the top of the first as he put the Gyrenes down in order with back to back strikeouts to start the game. The Royals offense then got to the Gyrenes in the bottom half as their first two batters reached. JJ Cruz then put the Royals ahead with an RBI groundout to make it 1-0. After a walk put two runners on Chun-Ming stepped to the plate and crushed a three run shot down the left field line to give the Royals a 4-0 lead.

Seeley meanwhile continued to shutdown the Gyrenes allowing just one hit through three innings. The Royals then added to their lead in the bottom of the third as they took advantage of an error. With two on and one out Matthew Dorado lined an RBI single through the right side to make it 5-0 before the Royals then added another on an error to take a 6-0 lead. The Royals then added another in the bottom of the fourth on a one out RBI single by Ryan Lamastra to make it 7-0.

Seeley then ran into trouble in the top of the fifth as the Gyrenes made it 7-1 with one out but he came back to get a lineout and a groundout to end the threat. The Gyrenes did make it close as they came back in the top of the sixth to make it 7-4 before then adding another in the seventh to pull within 7-5. Steven Ordorica then came in from the bullpen and induced a groundout to short with the bases loaded to keep the Royals lead at 7-5.

The Royals then gave Ordorica more run support as they added to their lead in the bottom of the seventh as Alex Moreno and David Rivera delivered back to back two out RBI singles to increase the Royals lead to 9-5. Moreno would then score on a wild pitch to make it 10-5. Ordorica then shutdown the Gyrenes in the eighth before running into trouble in the ninth with two on and no one out. Ordorica wasn't rattled as he induced a double play and got a groundout to seal the Royals 10-5 win.

  
Game 2:
Tyler Tilton got the start and pitched three innings allowing one run on three hits while walking two and striking out three. Bear Pinedo (0-1) took the loss allowing four runs on three hits while walking one. Moreno, Rivera and Cruz led the Royals driving in two runs each.

The Royals got off to a good start as Tilton worked his way around a one out walk striking out three Bulldogs while the Royals took the lead in the bottom half with a two run bomb by Cruz to make it 2-0. The Royals then added to their lead in the second as Moreno dropped an RBI single down the right field line to make it 3-0. Rivera then followed with a two run single through the left side to increase the Royals lead to 5-0. The Bulldogs struck back in the third to make it 5-1 but the Royals pushed their lead back to five Gunnar Magrann launched his first home run of the year to make it 6-1. The Bulldogs would once again pull a run back in the top of the fourth to make it 6-2 but once again the Royals as Moreno led off the inning with a first pitch home run to center to increase the Royals lead to 7-2.

The Bulldogs kept coming though as they made it 7-3 in the top of the sixth. The Royals were unable to add to their lead in the bottom of the sixth while the Bulldogs struk for 12 runs in the top of the seventh as they took a 15-7 lead. The Royals tried to fight back as they made it 15-8 but that's as close as they got as they fell 15-8.

The Royals continue action at home as they host No. 3 Lewis-Clark State on Tuesday, February 6 with a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 PM. Check our website for updates as schedule may change due to weather.
