Royals Comeback Falls Short in 10-9 Loss to DII Eagles

Fullerton, CA – The No. 11 Hope International University baseball team (10-8) couldn't complete the comeback as they fell 10-9 to NCAA Division II Biola University Eagles on Tuesday evening at home at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA.

Steven Ordorica (1-1) got the start and took the loss pitching 1 2/3 innings allowing five unearned runs on one hit while walking four and striking out three. David Rivera led the Royals offense going 4-for-5 with 3 RBIs.

The Eagles took advantage of an error to jump on top 1-0 in the top of the first. The Royals looked to rally in the bottom half as Alex Moreno doubled to start things off but the Royals were unable to cash in as headed to the second trailing 1-0. The Eagles then struck for a huge second inning as they took advantage of five walks and two errors to take an 8-0 lead. They would then add another in the third as the Royals trailed 9-0.

The Royals didn't give up and got to work in the bottom of the third as they started a two out rally with a hit batter and a single by Rivera. JJ Cruz then stepped to the plate and ripped a triple down the left field line to make it 9-2. The Royals then continued their comeback in the bottom of the fifth as Seth Nelson led things off with a single. Two batters later David Rivera launched a two run double to center to cut the Eagles lead to 9-4. Cruz then singled to left and would score later on a wild pitch to make it 9-5.

The Royals pitching meanwhile allowed just one more run in the top of the sixth before Bear Pinedo came in and got the final batter to strikeout and limit the damage as the Royals trailed 10-5. The Royals offense got back to work in the bottom of the seventh as Amari Bartee ripped a triple to lead things off. Moreno then came through with an RBI double to make it 10-6. After Rivera singled Cruz would drive in another run on a fielder's choice as the Royals made it 10-7.

Boom Ward then pitched a scoreless top of the eighth while the Royals got back to work in the bottom half. The Royals would load the bases with one out before Moreno drove in a run on a fielder's choice to make it 10-8. Rivera then followed with a clutch two out RBI single to make it 10-9 but Cruz would strikeout to end the inning and keep the Eagles ahead. Chandler DeJong then pitched a scoreless top of the ninth while striking out two to give the Royals a chance to win it in the bottom of the ninth. The Royals tried to rally as a hit batter, a walk and a bunt gave them runners on second and third with two down but they were unable to get the winning hit as their comeback fell short in a 10-9 loss.

The Royals continue action on the road as they travel up to Northern California for a GSAC series against Menlo beginning on Friday, March 1 at 2:00 PM in Atherton, CA.
