Landry Gem Leads Royals to Split With Mustangs

Santa Clarita, CA – The No. 11 Hope International University baseball team (10-7, 4-2 GSAC) won their second GSAC series as they split a doubleheader with The Master's on the road as they won the first game 7-4 before falling 13-3 in the second game on Saturday afternoon in Santa Clarita, CA.

Game 1:
Josh Landry (1-0) picked up his first win turning in his best start of the season as he threw a three hit shutout over 7 innings while walking one and striking out 10. Alec Arnone led the Royals offense going 4-for-5 with two RBIs.

Once again the Royals jumped on top of the Mustangs in the top of the first. With two on and one out yesterday's hero Alec Arnone ripped an RBI double to right to put the Royals up 1-0. Derek Sims then followed with an RBI double to left center to increase the Royals lead to 2-0. Landry meanwhile shutdown the Mustangs offense in the bottom half as he worked around a leadoff single to retire the side before retiring the Mustangs in order in the second, third and fourth innings.

The Royals offense then added to their lead as David Rivera launched a two out RBI double in the top of the fourth to make it 3-0. Landry then pitched a scoreless fifth and sixth while the Royals added to their lead in the top of the seventh on a bases loaded walk and a fielder's choice to increase their lead to 5-0. Landry then put the Mustangs down in order in the bottom of the seventh while the Royals once again scored in the top of the eighth as Arnone knocked in his second run of the game before Gunna Magrann came in clutch with a two out RBI single as the Royals took a 7-0 lead.

The Mustangs didn't give up as they got two runs in the bottom of the eighth and then two runs in the bottom of the ninth with one down to make it 7-4. Ordorica then came in from the bullpen to pick up his first save of the year as he finished off the Mustangs with a groundout and a strikeout to seal a Royals 7-4 win and second GSAC series win.

Game 2:
Chaz McWilliams (1-1) got the start and took the loss after exiting in the top of the first inning after allowing one run on one hit while walking one and striking out two. J.J Cruz led the Royals offense going 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

The Mustangs took advantage of the Royals pitching woes in the first as they took a 1-0 lead. The Royals tried to rally in the top of the second with two on and one out but grounded into a double play to end the threat. The Mustangs then broke open the game in the bottom of the second as they increased their lead to 6-0. They would add another in the bottom of the fourth as they took a 7-0 lead.

The Royals didn't give up as they looked to rally in the top of the fifth. With two on and one out Moreno ripped an RBI double to left center to make it 7-1. Cruz then followed with a two run single to center to make it 7-3. That's as close as the Royals got as they answered five five in the bottom of the fifth and another two in the bottom of the sixth as they went on to win 14-3.

The Royals continue action at home as they host NCAA DIII Biola on Tuesday, February 27 at 6:00 PM at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA.
