Royals Sweep Defending NAIA Champion Raiders Behind Puente Gem

Fullerton, CA – The No. 19 Hope International University softball team (17-2) ran their win streak to seven games as they swept the No. 2 NAIA defending Champion Southern Oregon University Raiders winning 1-0 in an eight inning walk off and 5-3 on Friday afternoon at home at Lions Field in Fullerton, CA

Game 1:
Allie Puente (8-2) picked up the win throwing a two hit shutout over 8 innings while striking out ten. Alyssa Castaneda led the Royals offense going 1-for-1 with an RBI.

It was a pitcher's duel throughout as both teams went down in order to start the game. The Royals would get their first hit in the bottom of the second but were unable to capitalize while the Raiders put a runner in scoring position with two down in the top of the third but Allie struckout the final batter to keep the game scoreless.

The Royals threatened again in the bottom of the fourth as they got back to back singles leading to runners on second and third with one down but again were unable to draw first blood as the game remained scoreless. The Raiders best chance came in the top of the seventh with a leadoff single but Allie put the following Raiders down in order as the Royals looked to win it in the bottom of the seventh. After the Royals failed to score in the bottom of the seventh the game headed to extras.

With the international tiebreaker rule in effect, the Raiders started with a runner on second base in the top of the eighth but Allie didn't allow her to score as she got a strikeout, groundout and then a pop up with the runner on third to end the innings. The Royals then came to bat with Arianna Coronado bunting Makenna Stuart to third with one down. Castaneda then stepped to the plate as a pinch hitter and ripped the game winning single into center field as the Royals won 1-0 in a walkoff upset.

Game 2:
Grace Craig got the start and pitched four innings allowing three runs on four hits while walking four and striking out one. Allie Puente (10-2) picked up the win in relief allowing just two hits over three innings while walking one and striking out two. Samantha Villanueva led the Royals offense going 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

The Royals opened the scoring in the bottom of the first as Asia Chacon reached base on a hit by pitch, was bunted over to third and then came home on a sac fly by Emma McCraw to put the Royals up 1-0 without recording a hit. The Raiders answered in the top of the second as they scored two runs with two down to take a 2-1 lead. Craig then induced a groundout to limit the damage.

The Royals didn't give up as they put together a two out rally in the bottom of the third. With two down McCraw delivered the Royals first hit with a single up the middle to get things started. Villaneuva then followed by crushing her first home run of the year over the left field wall to put the Royals back ahead 3-2.

The NAIA defending Champion Raiders didn't give up either as Craig had to work her way around a pair of walks in the top of the fourth to keep the Royals ahead. After allowing a leadoff walk in the top of the fifth Craig was replaced by Allie. The Raiders then used a steal, a sac bunt and a fielder's choice suicide squeeze at the plate to tie the game 3-3. Allie then induced a popup to limit the damage to one. The Royals quickly answered in the bottom of the fifth as they put together another two out rally. Villanueva got things started with a double before Katrina Rodriguez traded places with her with a booming double off the left field wall to put the Royals up 4-3. Jazzy Smith then ripped a double off the diving right fielder to increase the Royals lead to 5-3.

The Raiders tried to answer but Allie held strong working her way around a one out walk in the top of the sixth to keep the game 5-3. Once again the Raiders would threaten in the top of the seventh with back to back singles before putting runners on second and third with two down. Allie wasn't about to fold as she got the Raiders best two hitters to pop up and end the game as the Royals swept the defending NAIA Champions 5-3.

The Royals continue action on the road as they head to Claremont, CA to take on NCAA Division III opponent Pomona-Pitzer in a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 PM.
