Villanueva and Puente Help Lead Royals to Sweep of DIII Sagehens

Claremont, CA – The No. 19 Hope International University softball team (19-2) ran their win streak to nine games as they swept the NCAA Division III Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens winning 10-5 and 3-1 on Saturday afternoon on the road in Claremont, CA

Game 1:
Allie Puente (11-2) picked up the win throwing a two hit shutout over 4 innings while striking out seven. Emma McCraw, Samantha Villanueva and Jazzy Smith led the Royals offense with each driving in two runs.

The Royals jumped on top of the Sagehens in the top of the first as Smith came through with a two out RBI single to put the Royals up 1-0. Allie then put the Sagehens down in order in the bottom of the first before working around a hit in the second to retire the side. The Royals then added to their lead in the top of the third. The Royals got things started with back to back singles before Smith delivered her second RBI of the game to make it 2-0. Katrina Rodriguez then drove in another run on a fielder's choice to make it 3-0. 

Allie then put the Sagehens down in order in the bottom of the third while the Royals broke the game wide open in the top of the fourth. With a runner on second and one down Asia Chacon delivered an RBI single to make it 4-0. The Royals then made it 5-0 on a wild pitch before McCraw came through with a two run single to increase the Royals lead to 7-0. Villaneuva then launched her second home run in two days over the left field wall to increase the Royals lead to 9-0. A throwing error would then lead to another run as the Royals took a commanding 10-0 lead.

Looking to close out the game early the Royals went to the bullpen but couldn't keep the Sagehens off the board as they struck for three runs in the bottom of the fifth and two in the bottom of the sixth to make it 10-5. Ashlee Kean then worked her way around an error in the bottom of the seventh as she retired the next three Sagehens as the Royals won 10-5.

Game 2:
Grace Craig got the start and pitched one inning allowing one run on three hits. Allie Puente (12-2) picked up the win in relief throwing six shutout innings allowing just three hits while walking one and striking out six. Katrina Rodriguez led the Royals offense going 2-for-4 with an RBI.

After a scoreless first Craig ran into trouble as the Sagehens loaded the bases with nobody out. Allie then came in in relief and only allowed a sac fly as the Sagehens took 1-0 lead. She then got a groundout and foul out to end the inning and limit the damage. The Royals then rallied in the top of the fourth as the loaded the bases with one out before Chacon worked a bases loaded walk to tie it 1-1. Allie then worked around a one out double in the bottom of the fourth to keep the game tied 1-1.

The Royals offense then got back to work in the top of the fifth as McCraw led off with a double. Villanueva then ripped an RBI double into the left field corner to put the Royals up 2-1. After a sac bunt Rodriguez followed with an RBI single to right to increase the Royals lead to 3-1. Allie then put the Sagehens down in order in the bottom of the fifth before working around a single in the bottom of the sixth to strikeout the side and keep the Royals lead at 3-1. The Sagehens didn't give up as they put two on with one down in the bottom of the seventh but Allie came back to get a strikeout and a groundout to end the inning and seal a 3-1 win.

The Royals continue action on the road as they head to Lancaster, CA to take on Antelope Valley for the second time this season with a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 PM.
