Royals Drop Tough Match to Red Hawks 3-1

Fullerton, CA – The Hope International men's volleyball team (3-2) fell 3-1 to the Simpson University Red Hawks on Saturday evening at home in the Darling Pavilion.

The Red Hawks got off to a quick start as they took an early 9-3 lead. The Royals quickly called timeout and got within 14-10 on a kill by Julian Zavala. The Red Hawks continued to answer point for point by the Royals kept battling as a Zavala kill made it 20-18 but that's as close as they got as the Red Hawks closed out the set winning 25-21 and taking a 1-0 lead. The second set was a battle as the teams exchanged leads with back to back kills from Zavala and Kyler Tufuga putting the Royals up 10-9. The Red Hawks answered to tie it 10-10 but the Royals went on a 9-1 run led by three kills from Coby Prowse to take control with a 19-11 lead. The Red Hawks fought back to make it 24-18 but a kill by Zavala sealed the Royals 25-18 win to the game 1-1.

The Red Hawks jumped out to a 5-2 before going on to lead 13-6 midway through the fourth set. The Royals didn't give up as later in the set they went on a 6-1 run with three kills each from Prowse and Tufuga to pull within 17-15. The Red Hawks would go on to lead 21-19 before the Royals retook the lead on a 4-0 run with back to back kills from Zavala to make it 23-21. The Red Hawks though would fight back with four straight points to win the set 25-23 as the Royals trailed 2-1. The Royals continued to fight as they opened the fourth set with a 10-7 thanks to back to back service aces from Javier Castillo. The Red Hawks were too strong as they came back to lead 24-19. Back to back kills from Zavala and Prowse kept the Royals alive but the Red Hawks closed it out as the Royals fell 25-21 and 3-1. Zavala led the Royals with 19 kills.

The Royals continue action at home as they host the University of Saint Katherine on Tuesday, February 13 at 6:00 PM in the Darling Pavilion.
