Royals Split On First Day of NAIA Ball East West Challenge

Mesa, AZ – The No. 11 Hope International University baseball team (3-1) opened the NAIA Ball East West Challenge with an 11-3 win over the St. Thomas University Bobcats before falling to the No. 1 Southeastern University Fire 9-1 in their second game on Thursday at Gene Autry Park in Mesa, AZ.

Game 1:
Chaz McWilliams (1-0) picked up his first win of the season as he pitched 7 innings allowing three runs on four hits while walking two and striking out 13. The Royals offense was led by Alec Arnone and Branden Chun-Ming who each drove in two runs.

The Royals offense got to the Bobcats pitching early as Alex Moreno and David Rivera got things going with back-to-back singles. Dean Toigo then ripped an RBI double to put the Royals on top 1-0. Back-to-back walks then forced in another run as the Royals took a 2-0 lead. Mario Tostado then delivered a sac fly to right to make it 3-0 before Chung-Ming drove in another run on an RBI groundout to put the Royals up 4-0. The Bobcats struck back in the first to make it 4-1 but McWilliams got a strikeout to end the inning and preserve the lead. The Royals got right back to work in the top of the second as they made it 5-1 on a balk before Arnone drove in Toigo to make it 6-1. The Bobcats didn't go down without a fight as they made it 6-3 but once again McWilliams limited the damage with another strikeout to end the inning.

Both pitchers settled in from there with McWilliams pitching a 1-2-3 bottom of the third while the Royals offense added to their lead in the fifth. Chun-Ming led things off with a double before Amari Bartee then brought him home with a double to make it 7-3. Meanwhile McWilliams didn't allow a hit after the second inning as he continued to shutdown the Bobcats. The Royals offense continued to score as well as David Rivera delivered a one out RBI single to make it 8-3. Later in the inning, Toigo would drive in another run to make it 9-3 at the end of the seventh. The Royals would then make it 10-3 on a bases loaded walk by Jacob Savoy in the eighth.

Josh Landry then came in from the bullpen and worked around a leadoff walk as he struck out the next three Bobcats to send the game to the ninth. JJ Cruz added to the Royals lead in the ninth with a sac fly to make it 11-3. Boom Ward then came in to pitch the bottom of the ninth and struck out the side to seal the Royals 11-3 victory.

Game 2:
Joshua Ross (1-1) got the start and took the loss pitching 2 1/3 innings while allowing seven runs on six hits while walking two and striking out two. Maciel led the Royals offense going 1-for-4 with an RBI.

The No. 1 ranked Fire got out to an early lead as they used their speed and aggressiveness to make it 2-0 in the first inning. They would score another in the fourth and five in the third as the Royals trailed 8-0 going into the top of the fourth. The Royals continued to battle at the plate as they took advantage of a pair of errors to put two on with no out. They weren't able to cash in as Cruz fouled out and Chun-Ming pooped out to end the threat.

Justin Drury came in from the bullpen for the Royals and pitched 3 2/3 innings allowing just two runs on two hits while walking one and striking out two. A bright spot for the Royals was Freshman Owen Dunn who came in from the bullpen in his first appearance of the season and shut down the Fire in the seventh and the eighth allowing no hits while striking out three on nineteen pitches. The Royals offense then broke up the no-hitter in the top of the ninth with a hit by Cruz. Chun-Ming then reached on an error to put runners on the corners with no outs as the Royals looked to rally. Ryan Maciel then broke up the shutout with an RBI single to make it 9-1. That's all the Royals were able to get though as they fell 9-1.

The Royals continue action at the NAIA Ball East West Challenge in Arizona as they take on No. 6 Tennessee Wesleyan on Friday, February 2 at 11:45 AM at Greenway High School in Glendale, AZ.
