Royals Season Ends With Opening Round Loss to Saints

Claremore, OK – The Hope International men's soccer team's (14-4-3) six game winning streak came to an end as they fell 3-1 to the Carroll College Saints in the NAIA Opening Round at Rogers State University in Claremore, OK

It was the Saints who got off to the better start as the Royals found themselves in their own half defending for the first portion of the game. The Royals defended well until the 20th minute when the Saints were awarded a somewhat soft penalty that they converted to take a 1-0 lead. The Royals looked for an answer but were unable to put a shot on target. Royals goalie Berlin Torres kept them in the game with two great saves to deny the Saints as the Royals went into the locker room down 1-0.

The Royals came out much better to start the second half as they looked for the equalizer but it was the Saints who scored again in the 49th minute to take a 2-0 lead. The Royals didn't give up as they kept looking for their first goal and they would find it as Emi Amaro struck for his second goal of the year in the 54th minute as the Royals pulled within 2-1. The Royals kept pushing for more and came close to equalizing but a header by Vincent Lopez flashed over the top of the bar as the Royals continued to trail. The Saints would then strike again on the counterattack in the 74th minute as the Royals fell 3-1. Torres played the first 55 minutes recording 8 saves while Milton Herrera played 35 minutes with one save.
