Mathias Leads Royals to 3-1 Victory Over Firestorm

Glendale, AZ - The Hope International women's volleyball team (10-6, 4-2 GSAC) took down the Arizona Christian University Firestorm 3-1 on Friday evening on the road in Glendale, AZ.

The Firestorm got off to a good start as they took an early 7-4 lead. The Royals quickly turned the set around as they responded on an 8-0 run to take a 12-7 lead. The Firestorm kept it close at 15-11 but the Royals went on a 4-0 run with back to back kills from Addie Mathias to extend their advantage to 19-11. The Firestorm didn't go down easily as they rallied to make it 22-20 but the Royals held strong finishing the set on a 3-0 run with a kill by Mathias sealing a 25-20 win and a 1-0 lead. The Firestorm battled back in the second set as they took an early 6-2 lead. The Royals answered to take the lead with two aces by Cassidy Koffroth to go up 9-8. The Royals went on to extend their lead to 15-11 but the Firestorm answered with a 6-0 run to retake the lead at 17-15. The Royals kept it close but were unable to rally as the Firestorm pulled away to win 25-19 and tie it 1-1.

The third set was a battle early on as the Royals took an early lead but the Firestorm kept it close as a kill by Mathias put the Royals up 9-7. The Firestrom tied it 9-9 but the Royals seized control with a 9-1 run led by three kills from Koffroth to take an 18-10 lead. The Firestorm didn't give up as they pulled within 20-15 but the Royals had all the answers as they closed out the set on a 5-2 run with a Yale Spoja kill winning the set 25-17 for a 2-1 lead. The Royals looked to close out the game in the fourth set as they opened on a 7-1 run with great serving from Naomi Ruiz and two kills from Cassidy Koffroth. The Royals would go on to lead 14-6 but the Firestorm didn't go down easily as they rallied to cut the lead to 17-15. The Royals quickly regrouped after a timeout and closed out the set on an 8-3 run with kills by Mathias and Kat Schwab giving them a 25-18 win to secure a 3-1 victory. Mathias led the Royals with 16 kills.

The Royals continue GSAC action on the road as they head to San Dimas, CA to take on Life Pacific on Friday, October 11 at 7:00 PM.
