Royals Dominate Elks 71-46 in Season Opening Win

Fullerton, CA - The Hope International University men's basketball team (1-0) opened up their season with a 71-46 win over the Stanton University Elks in their home opener on Friday evening in the Darling Pavilion.

The Elks started off the game well as they took a 7-0 lead just three minutes into the game. The Royals quickly answered on a 9-0 run finished off by a layup from Aaron Wadman to take a 9-7 lead with 12:16 to go. The teams would then trade leads before the Royals went on a little run to extend their advantage to 18-12 midway through the half. The Elks stayed in the game as they battled back to tie it 20-20 with 4:45 to go. The Royals then seized back control with an 8-0 run finished off by a CJ Fisher layup to put them up 28-20 with three minutes to go. The teams then exchanged baskets with Wadman finding Grant Sii to increase the Royals lead to 32-24. The Elks would answer with the final basket of the half as the Royals took a 32-26 halftime lead.

The Elks quickly made it 32-30 to start the second but the Royals answered on a 13-2 run with five points each from Fisher and Sii to put the Royals up 45-32 with 14:27 to go. The Elks would battle back to get within 47-37 but the Royals weren't about to let up as Fisher nailed a three from Sii to jumpstart a 17-0 run as the Royals took a commanding 64-37 lead with 5:20 remaining. Sebastian Castro was also a big part of the run scoring nine points in his return from last year's injury. The Royals continued to dominate from there as Jonah Felix got a steal and layup off a fast break to give the Royals their largest lead at 68-40 with 3:01 remaining. The Royals then went on to win 71-46 led by 14 points from Fisher on 4-for-6 shooting. The Royals forced 22 turnovers with 13 steals.

The Royals continue their season at home as they take on the University of the Redlands on Wednesday, October 30 at 7:00 PM in the Darling Pavilion..
