Royals Topple NCAA Division III Bulldogs 94-91 in OT Thriller

Fullerton, CA - The Hope International University men's basketball team (2-0) won their second game in a row as they toppled the NCAA Division III University of Redlands Bulldogs 94-91 in an overtime thriller on Wednesday evening at home in the Darling Pavilion.

The Royals came out of the gates on an 8-3 run finished off by a bucket by Aaron Wadman to take the early lead. The Bulldogs quickly dialed up their full court press to come back and take a 9-8 lead with 15:27 to go. From there it was back and forth with the teams trading buckets as Wadman laid it in again to tie it 19-19 midway through the half. The Bulldogs would go on to take a 29-25 lead with 6:28 to go but the Royals quickly answered on an 8-0 run with six points from Sebastian Castro to retake a 33-29 lead with 4:00 remaining. The Bulldogs would come back to tie it 35-35 before Nick Hopkins dished off to Miles Ceballos who put the Royals up 37-35 with 2:16 to go. The Bulldogs would answer with the final four points as they took a 39-37 lead at halftime.

The Royals would quickly answer with a three from Grant Sii and a jumper by Hopkins to retake a 42-39 lead but the Bulldogs dialed up the pressure once again and came right back to take a 50-44 lead with 17:36 left. Once again the Royals came right back as a jumper by Hopkins put them up 53-52 just five minutes into the half. The Bulldogs would answer to take a 64-60 lead but the Royals came storming back on a 12-3 run led by five points from Sii to take a 72-67 lead with 7:59 to go. This time the Bulldogs rallied to tie it before buckets by Hopkins and Sii put the Royals up 83-79 with 1:41 to go. Again though the Bulldogs came back to tie it 84-84 with :32 seconds left. Sii then had a chance to win it but his jump shot went off the rim as the game headed to overtime.

The Royals quickly jumped on top again as they began overtime on a 8-3 led by four points from Wadman all coming at the free throw line to take a 92-87 lead with 2:13 to go. The Bulldogs didn't give up as they pulled within 92-91 with :16 seconds to go. Sii then knocked down two clutch free throws to put the Royals up 94-91 with :12 seconds to go. The Bulldogs then had one last chance to tie it but the Royals defense forced an off balance three that didn't go in as they prevailed 94-91 in overtime. Hopkins and Castro led the Royals with 20 points each.

The Royals continue their season on the road as they head a short distance to Irvine, CA to take on NCAA Division II Concordia Irvine on Saturday, November 2nd at 2:00 PM.
