Royals Battle With Mustangs but Fall Short 3-1

Fullerton, CA - The Hope International women's volleyball team (10-8, 4-4 GSAC) fought hard but fell 3-1 to the Master's University Mustangs on Friday evening at home in the Darling Pavilion.

The Royals got off to a good start as they used a 6-1 with kills from Savannah Salter and Addie Mathias to take an 8-4 lead. The Mustangs had an answer though as they rallied to take a 12-10 lead. The Royals regrouped after a timeout and went on a 7-1 run led by two kills from Rachael Street and an ace by Annie Nugent to retake a 17-13 lead. This time the Mustang regrouped after a timeout as they came back to tie it 20-20. The teams then exchanged points with two kills by Salter putting the Royals back ahead 22-21. The Mustangs had all the answers though as they closed out the set to win 25-23 and take a 1-0 lead. The Royals got off to a strong start in the second set as they opened on a 5-1 run before going on to take a 13-9 lead led by two kills from Rachael Street. The Mustangs though came storming back to take a 16-15 lead. The Royals quickly called timeout and would rally to take a 19-17 lead with a big kill by Street. The Mustangs once again answered to go up 23-20. It was then the Royals turn to rally as they used a 4-0 run with a kill by Olivia Zawalick to take a 24-23 lead. The Mustangs didn't give up as they came back to force extra points but the Royals had the final say as they closed out the set with back to back kills from Salter and Mathias to win the set 28-26 and tie the game 1-1.

The Mustangs looked for a response in the third set as the teams exchanged leads with the Mustangs taking an early 10-9 advantage. The Royals quickly answered on a 5-1 run led by two kills from Street to take a 14-11 lead. The Mustangs battled back to make it 18-17 but the Royals responded well with a 3-0 run with a kill from Lauren Cummings and two service aces from Mia Luna to go up 21-17. The Mustangs weren't done yet as they came storming back to take a 23-22 lead. The Royals fought back to take a 25-24 lead on a kill by Street but the Mustangs had the final say as they closed out the set 27-25 for a 2-1 lead. The Royals looked to stay alive in the fourth set as they came storming out of the gates to take a 5-0 lead led by two aces from Chloe Mata. The Mustangs quickly called timeout to regroup as they came storming back to take a 14-9 lead. The Royals didn't go down without a fight as they rallied to get within 16-15 on a kill by Mathias and then 17-16 on a kill by Koffroth. The Mustangs weren't to be denied though as they closed out the set to win 25-18 as the Royals fell 3-1. Street led the Royals with 12 kills

The Royals continue GSAC action at home as they host Embry-Riddle (AZ) on Saturday, October 19 at 1:00 PM in the Darling Pavilion in Fullerton, CA.
