Puente Perfect, Craig Two Hitter Leads Royals to Sweep of Golden Eagles

Riverside, CA – The No. 19 Hope International University softball team (5-1) bounced back from their first loss of the season as they swept the La Sierra University Golden Eagles winning 4-0 and 8-0 on Monday afternoon in Riverside, CA.

Game 1:
Allie Puente (3-1) picked up the win as she threw a perfect game over seven innings while striking out 20 of the 21 batters she faced. Jazzy Smith led the Royals offense going 3-for-3 with an RBI.

The Royals offense got to work immediately in the first as they got back-to-back singles with one out to put runners on first and second. Smith then ripped an RBI single to center field to put the Royals up 1-0. Kayla Stanley then followed with an RBI single to center as the Royals took a 2-0 advantage.

Allie Puente meanwhile struck out the first twelve Golden Eagles she faced as she held them off the board and the bases. The Royals offense then struck again in the fifth as they made it 3-0 on a passed ball before Sarah Reisler singled to bring in another run and increase the Royals lead to 4-0. Allie then finished off the game with eight straight strikeouts setting a new single-game record for strikeouts at 20 as the Royals won 4-0.

Game 2:
Grace Craig (1-0) picked up the win throwing a two hit shutout over five innings while striking out one and walking one. Samantha Villanueva led the Royals offense going 3-for-3 with two RBIs.

The Royals once again got things started off with back to back singles. Two batters later Smith delivered with an RBI groundout to put the Royals up 1-0. Craig then put the Golden Eagles down in order in the bottom of the first as the Royals looked to add to their lead in the second. With runners on first and second and one out Arely Coronado delivered an RBI groundout to increase the Royals lead to 2-0. The Royals would then add another on a wild pitch to make it 3-0.

Craig then worked around a two out hit getting a pop out to end any threat while the Royals once again added to their lead in the top of the third. With a runner in scoring position and two down Kayla Stanley ripped an RBI single to make it 4-0. Arely Coronado then followed with a single before Villanueva lined an RBI single to left to increase the Royals lead to 5-0. Coronado would then come around to score on a wild pitch as the Royals took a commanding 6-0 lead.

After a scoreless fourth the Royals got right back to work in the top of the fifth as they loaded the bases with nobody out. Villanueva then came through with her second RBI as she ripped a single to left to make it 7-0. McCraw would then make it 8-0 on a one out fielder's choice. Craig then put the Golden Eagles down in order in the bottom of the fifth as the Royals won 8-0 by mercy rule.
