Royals Fall 119-111 to Firestorm in Triple Overtime Thriller

Fullerton, CA - The Hope International University men's basketball team (14-7, 3-4 GSAC) lost their third game in a row as they lost in a heartbreaker 119-111 in triple overtime on Saturday afternoon at home in the Darling Pavilion.

It was a back and forth game throughout as the Firestorm took an early 14-9 lead six minutes into the game. The Royals came right back to take the lead 15-14 on a jumper by Jalen Shores but the Firestorm would go back up 16-15 with 12:10 remaining. The Royals defense then came up with several big turnovers to start a 10-0 run with four points each from Tristan Williams and Jozelle Carter Jr putting the Royals up 25-16 with 6:08 to go. The Royals would then take a 29-19 lead before the Firestorm stormed back to make it 33-32 with :36 seconds to go. Carter Jr would then answer with a layup to extend the Royals advantage to 35-32 at halftime.

The Firestorm came back to take the lead to start the second but Carter Jr answered again with a three to put the Royals up 38-36 with 16:22 to go. It was a back and forth battle from there with the teams exchanging leads as a jumper by Jalen Shores put the Royals up 48-47 with 12:37 to go. The Firestorm would quickly retake the lead and extend their advantage out to 61-57 with 6:06 remaining. The Royals kept it close but the Firestorm would take an 80-74 lead with under a minute to go. The Royals then stormed back in the final seconds as Shores and Dashiell nailed two big threes to make it 82-80 with eleven seconds to go. The Firestorm then went one for one at the line giving the Royals one last chance to tie it and they did as Dashiell drained a game-tying three from just inside the halfway line at the buzzer to send the game to overtime.

The Firestorm took the first lead in overtime as they led 95-91 with 1:14 to go. The Royals didn't give up as they came back to tie it 96-96 on a jumper by Grant Sii with :33 seconds to go. The Firestorm then had a last chance to win it but the Royals held strong to force a second overtime. Sii put the Royals up 98-96 to start the second overtime before going on to hit three free throws to put the Royals up 103-99 with 1:38 to go. This time the Firestorm came back to tie it with the Royals having one last chance to win it but Dashiell's three didn't land as the game went to a third overtime. Jonah Felix put the Royals back ahead to start overtime 105-103. The Firestorm would come back to take the lead again but a jumper by Sii put the Royals back ahead 111-110 with 1:56 to go. The Royals then ran into foul trouble late after some questionable calls which allowed the Firestorm to take the lead and eventually win 119-111. Sii led the Royals with a career high 33 points off the bench on 10-for-18 shooting.
  
The Royals continue GSAC play at home as they host Arizona Christian on Saturday, January 27 at 2:00 PM in the Darling Pavilion in Fullerton, CA.
