Poor Shooting Costs Royals in 70-62 Defeat to Mustangs

Santa Clarita, CA - The Hope International University men's basketball team's (14-5, 3-2 GSAC) four game win streak came to an end as they fell 54-43 to the Master's University Mustangs on Saturday evening on the road in Santa Clarita, CA.

The Mustangs got off to a good start as they took an early 10-3 advantage with 16:33 remaining. The Royals regrouped and went on an 11-4 run finished off by a big three from Tristan Williams to tie the game 14-14 midway through the half. The Mustangs quickly answered to retake the lead and then stretched their advantage to 29-18 with 5:39 to go. The Royals defense then came up with several big stops and turnovers leading to a 6-0 run led by four points from Jalen Shores as they made it 29-24 with 1:59 remaining. The Mustangs would close the half on a 6-2 run as they took a 35-27 advantage at halftime.

The Mustangs continued to extend their lead to start the second as they took a 43-32 lead just five minutes into the half. The Royals tried to answer as a three by Gaven Ramirez made it 50-43 with 11:09 to go. The Mustangs had all the answers as they regained a 54-43 lead with 8:34 left. The Royals didn't give up as they put together a 9-0 run with two big threes from Ramirez to make it 54-52 with five minutes to go. That was as close as they got as the Mustangs quickly responded to extend their lead back to 57-52. The Royals tried to fight back but the Mustangs went on to win 70-62. Williams led the Royals with 15 points.

The Royals continue GSAC play at home as they host OUAZ on Thursday, January 25 at the Darling Pavilion in Fullerton, CA.
