Ramirez Leads With 21 As Royals Down Oaks 76-72 in Instant Classic

Fullerton, CA - The Hope International University men's basketball team's (12-4, 2-1 GSAC) got a huge GSAC win as they took down the Menlo College Oaks 76-72 on Thursday evening in the Darling Pavilion.

It was a battle throughout with the score tied 8-8 early on before the Royals went on a 7-0 run finished off by a Williams jumper to extend their lead to 15-8 with 13:16 remaining. The Oaks recovered quickly as they answered with a 12-0 run to take a 20-15 lead midway through the quarter. The Royals quickly called a time-out and answered as Gaven Ramirez laid in a bucket to start an 8-0 run as the Royals retook a 23-20 lead with 7:36 remaining. The Royals continued to lead 25-24 but the Oaks came back on a 7-0 run to go up 31-25 with 3:18 left. The Royals regrouped once again as they closed the half on a 10-2 run finished off by a Ramirez steal and half court three pointer at the buzzer to put the Royals up 35-33 at halftime. Despite being outshot the Royals forced nine turnovers leading to 14 points while also going 5-for-5 at the line.

The Royals continued their momentum into the second as they took a 42-37 lead led by four points from Ramirez just three minutes into the half. The Oaks kept coming though as they continued to shoot well going on a 10-2 run to take a 47-44 lead with 14:47 to go. The Oaks would go on to increase their lead to 60-55 midway through the half. The Royals answered with a 10-1 run with two free throws by Tristan Williams putting them up 65-63 with 6:45 to go. The Royals continued to build their lead as a layup by Jalen Shores put them up 74-66 but the Oaks weren't done yet as they rallied on an 8-0 run to make it 74-72 with 1:43 to go. The Royals defense held strong as they forced a turnover and denied a game winning three attempt to hold the lead with :12 seconds to go. Grant Sii then nailed two free throws to seal a 76-72 win. Ramirez led the Royals with 21 points going 9-for-12 from the field. 
 
The Royals continue GSAC action as they host Jessup on Saturday, January 13 at 2:00 PM in the Darling Pavilion.
