Fullerton, CA - The Hope International University men's soccer team (5-1) won their second game in a row as an early goal gave them a 1-0 upset win over the SCIAC defending Champion NCAA Division III Chapman University Panthers on Thursday evening at OC Great Park Field 18 in Irvine, CA.
The Royals came out on the front foot as they scored on their first shot opportunity. It was
Tyler Moch who raced down the right wing and crossed in a great ball to
Jorge Perez who put a looping header into the right bottom corner of the goal as the Royals took a 1-0 lead just three minutes into the game. The Panthers best scoring chance would come in the 20th minute but Royals goalie
Milton Herrera came up with a big stop to preserve the Royals lead. The Royals defense would then limit the Panthers to just one more shot as the Royals went into halftime up 1-0.
The Panthers came out of the halftime break fired up and pushed forward searching for the equalizer but it never came as the Royals defense stood strong allowing just three shots with all coming in the first ten minutes. The Royals also had several chances to grab a second goal with chances from
Diego Lopez and
Leo Perez but the Panthers defense also held as the Royals came away with the 1-0 win. Herrera led the Royals in goal with two saves as he recorded his second shutout in a row.
The Royals next head to Pasadena, CA to take on another Division III opponent Caltech on Saturday, September 9 at 2:00 PM at OC Great Park Field 18 in Irvine, CA
