Royals Sweep Falcons to Split Final Day at USK Tourney

San Marcos, CA – The Hope International women's volleyball team (4-6) wrapped up play at the USK Labor Day Tourney with a split as they fell 3-0 to the University of Saint Katherine Firebirds before bouncing back with a 3-0 sweep of the Friends University Falcons on Friday in San Marcos, CA.

Game 1:
The Firebirds roared out to an early 12-5 advantage to start the game, but the Royals battled back with a 4-1 run led by a kill from Savannah Salter to get within 13-9. That's as close as they got though as the Firebirds pulled away going on to take set one 25-19 and a 1-0 lead. After scoring the first two points of the set the Royals went on to trail 15-13 midway through set two. The Royals then came back to tie it 15-15 but the Firebirds had all the answers as they took an 18-15 lead. The Royals responded to get back within 20-19 on a kill by Jade Philips but the Firebirds closed the set on a 5-0 run to win 25-19 and take a 2-0 lead. The Firebirds continued their momentum into the third set as they raced out to a 9-1 lead before going on to lead 14-8 midway through the set. The Royals fought back as they went on a 6-1 run finished off by a kill from Sofia Ramdhani to get within 15-14 but that's as close as they got as the Firebirds closed out the set winning 25-22 and 3-0. Cassidy Koffroth led the Royals with 12 kills.

Game 2:
The Royals looked to rebound in game two against the Falcons as they opened the first set on a 7-2 run before going on to take a 15-7 lead midway through the set led by three kills from Koffroth. The Falcons battled back to get within 16-12 but the Royals closed out the set with Addie Mathias delivering a kill to give the Royals a 25-19 win and a 1-0 lead. The second set started out back and forth as the teams exchanged leads before the Royals used a 9-2 run led by two kills from Salter to take a 14-9 lead. The Falcons would rally to get within 18-14 but once again the Royals responded by closing out the set this time with a kill from Philips to win 25-17 and take a 2-0 lead. The teams exchanged leads to start the third set before the Royals seized control with a 4-0 run led by a kill from Mathias to extend their lead to 14-9. The Falcons answered to get within 14-11 but the Royals weren't to be denied a sweep as they used a 9-1 run led by two kills from Salter to take a 23-12 lead. Mathias closed out the game with a kill and a service ace as the Royals took the final set 25-15 for a 3-0 win. Mathias led the Royals with 10 kills.

The Royals next open up GSAC play at home against Vanguard on Friday, September 8 at 6:00 PM on campus in the Darling Pavilion in Fullerton, CA.
