Royals Fight Hard but Fall to No. 15 Lions 3-1

Fullerton, CA – The Hope International women's volleyball team (4-7) started strong but fell 3-1 to the No. 15 ranked Vanguard University Lions in their GSAC home opener on Friday night in the Darling Pavilion.

The Royals came out strong as they went point for point with the Lions before taking a 9-5 lead led by two kills from Jade Philips. The Lions responded with an 8-1 run to take a 13-10 lead midway through the set. This time it was the Royals turn to rally as two kills from Philips helped them tie it back up 13-13 and from there it was a battle to the finish with the teams exchanging points. With the score 24-24 the Royals closed out the set with a kill from Addie Mathias and an ace from Cassidy Koffroth to win 26-24 and take a 1-0 lead. Trailing 2-1 to start the second set the Lions answered on a 16-0 run to take a commanding 17-2 lead. The Royals answered with a 5-0 run led by two kills from Kathryn Schwab to get within 17-7 but that's as close as they got as the Lions took the set 25-11 and tied the game 1-1.

The Royals looked to bounce back in the third set as they stayed point for point with the Lions until they fell behind 13-11 midway through the set. The Royals continued to put up a strong fight as they tied it and got within one multiple times including a Philips kill that made it 17-16. The Lions weren't to be denied though as they prevailed 25-20 and took a 2-1 lead. The Royals continued to battle in the fourth set but the Lions were too much as they used a 9-1 run to take a 15-6 lead. Back to back kills from Schwab and Koffroth got the Royals within 15-8 but the Lions were too much as they pulled away to win 25-12 and 3-1. Philips led the Royals with nine kills.
