Royals Sweep Eutectics to Split Day 1 at Summer Slam

Fullerton, CA – The Hope International women's volleyball team (2-3) opened up the 2023 HIU Summer Slam Tournament with a split as they fell 3-1 in the first game to the Rocky Mountain Battlin' Bears and then bounced back in game two with a 3-0 sweep over the University of Health Sciences & Pharmacy Eutectics on Friday at home in the Darling Pavilion.

Game 1:
The Battlin' Bears roared out to an early 9-3 advantage but the Royals came right back to make it 9-8 before going on to take their first lead at 14-13 off a kill from Faith Jones and a forced error. From there the teams exchanged leads before a kill from Jones put the Royals up 22-21. They were unable to hang on though as the Battlin' Bears closed on a 4-1 run to take set 1 25-23 and 1-0 lead. The second set was also a battle as this time the Royals took an early lead before going on to lead 13-12 off a kill from Macie Powell midway through the second set. This time the Battlin' Bears came back as they went on to take set two 25-20 and take a 2-0 lead.

The Battlin' Bears had all the momentum as they started the third set up 9-5 but little by little the Royals stayed in the fight trailing 19-17 before using a 3-0 run finished off by a Stacey Dawes service ace to take a 20-19 lead. The Battlin' Bears didn't give in either as they used a 4-0 run to go up 23-20 but the Royals weren't about to be swept as they closed on a 5-0 run led by back to back aces from Chloe Mata to win 25-23 and force a fourth set trailing 2-1. The fourth set was a battle early on as the teams exchanged leads before the Battlin' Bears took over going on to lead 19-13. The Royals weren't done yet as they used a 5-0 run led by two kills from Kathryn Schwab to get within 19-18 but that's as close as they got as the Battlin' Bears pulled away to take the final set 25-21 and the game 3-1. Koffroth led the Royals with 13 kills.

Game 2:
The first set started off back and forth before the Royals used a 3-0 run led by a kill each from Cassidy Koffroth and Jade Philips to take a 7-4 lead. The Royals would then go on to lead 13-8 midway through the set off a kill from Mathias. The Royals then closed the set on an 8-0 run led by two kills each from Koffroth and Philips as they won 25-12 and took a 1-0 lead. The Royals continued their momentum in the second set as they opened on a 10-0 run led by three kills from Mathias. It was all Royals from there as later on they used a 6-0 run to extend their lead to 22-4 as they went on to take set two 25-8 for a 2-0 lead. The Eutectics wouldn't go down without a fight as they stayed close to the Royals in the beginning of the third set but the Royals used a 4-0 run to pull away to an early 7-3 lead. The Eutectics came right back to tie it 13-13 midway through the set. The Eutectics would go on to take a 16-15 lead but the Royals closed the game on a 10-1 run led by two kills from Savannah Salter as they finished off a 3-0 sweep with a 25-17 win. Koffroth led the Royals with 11 kills.

The Royals will return to action tomorrow at the HIU Summer Slam as they take on Northwest at 2:00 PM before wrapping up the tournament against UC Merced at 6:00 PM.
