Royals Can't Comeback Drop Final Two At Summer Slam

Fullerton, CA – The Hope International women's volleyball team (2-5) continued the 2023 HIU Summer Slam Tournament with two tough losses as they couldn't pull off comebacks in a pair of 3-2 losses to the Northwest University Eagles in game one and in game two against the UC Merced Bobcats on Saturday at home in the Darling Pavilion.

Game 1:
The Eagles took control in set one as they used a 4-0 run to take an early 8-3 lead. The Royals fought hard and used a late 4-0 run to pull back within 22-20 but that's as close as they got as the Eagles took the first set 25-20 and a 1-0 lead. The Royals put up a battle in the second set as they took an early 7-4 lead with a 3-0 run finished off by a kill from Savannah Salter. The Eagles answered with a 5-0 run to take control as they would take a 15-10 lead midway through the set. The Royals continued to fight but the Eagles flew away with the set winning 25-15 to take a 2-0 lead.

The Royals started off the third set keeping pace with the Eagles as the teams exchanged leads with the Royals leading 10-9 off a kill from Cassidy Koffroth. The Eagles came right back to take a 20-15 lead but the Royals weren't about to be swept as they fought back to tie it 21-21. The Eagles would go on to lead 24-22 but once again the Royals came back as they went on a 3-0 run led by a Koffroth kill to take a 25-24 lead. This time the Eagles would come back but the Royals got the final say as they closed on a 3-0 run with a kill each from Koffroth and Addie Mathias to win 28-26 and get within 2-1. The Royals continued their momentum into the fourth set as they staked out an early 7-3 advantage led by four kills from Koffroth. The Eagles came right back to get within 7-6 but the Royals responded well using a 6-1 run to take a 13-7 lead midway through the set. The Eagles kept coming as they got within 24-23 but the Royals stayed strong as Faith Jones delivered the set winning kill 25-23 to tie the game 2-2.

It was a back and forth fifth set as the Royals held leads of 12-9 and 14-11 thanks to a big kill from Koffroth but the Eagles closed the game on a 6-1 run to take the final set 17-15 and the game 3-2. Koffroth led the way with 19 kills.

Game 2:
The Bobcats seized control early to start set one as they got out to a 5-1 lead but the Royals came storming back to outscore the Bobcats 16-5 led by three kills from Jade Philips to take a 17-10 lead. The Royals would then pull out to a 24-18 advantage but this time the Bobcats came back to win the set 26-24 and take a 1-0 lead. The teams exchanged leads early on in the second set before the Bobcats pulled out to a 13-8 advantage midway through. The Royals didn't give up though as they clawed their way back to 19-19 on a kill by Kathryn Schwab. That's as close as they got as the Bobcats closed out the set winning 25-20 and taking a 2-0 lead.

The Royals led early on in the third set as an ace by Kylee Hernandez put them up 10-6 but the Bobcats came back on a 6-1 run to take a 12-11 advantage. The Royals answered on a 5-0 run led by two kills from Philips as they took a 16-12 lead. The Bobcats came right back to take a 21-20 lead but the Royals weren't about to be swept and went on a 5-1 run led by three kills from Macie Powell as they won 25-22 and got within 2-1. The Royals continued their momentum in set four as they took an early 11-8 advantage before going on a 9-0 run to seize control and go up 20-8. From there it was Royals as they closed out the set with a kill from Powell to win 25-13 and pull even at 2-2.

The fifth and final set was a thriller as the Royals took an early 7-5 lead off a kill from Koffroth. The Bobcats though came right back to take an 8-7 advantage. After a kill by Jones tied it at 8-8 the Bobcats would take over with a 5-1 run to take a 13-9 lead. The Royals fought to get within 13-11 but the Bobcats closed out the game taking the final set 15-12 and the game 3-2. Philips led the Royals with 15 kills.
