Royals Walk It Off Twice In Extras To Stay Alive At GSAC Championships

Irvine, CA – The Hope International softball team (38-13) won both of their games today at the GSAC Tournament as they stayed alive first walking off to a 1-0 victory in ten innings over the Jessup Warriors and then walking off to a 2-1 victory in eight innings over Arizona Christian on Tuesday at the OC Great Park in Irvine, CA

Game 1:
Allie Puente (26-3) picked up the win throwing a complete game 10 inning shutout allowing just four hits while striking out ten. Emily Puente led the Royals offense going 2-for-5 with the walkoff hit.

Once again it was a pitcher's duel throughout as both Allie Puente and her counterpart were on top of their game. The Warriors put a runner on second in the top of the third but Puente got a strikeout and a lineout to end the threat as the game remained scoreless. The Royals offense continued to come up empty while the Warriors threatened again in the seventh but Puente was up to the task as she got a strikeout to end the threat as the game continued scoreless.

The Royals were unable to convert in the bottom of the seventh as the game headed to extra innings. Since it was a playoff game the international tie breaker rule was not used. The Royals had chances to win it in the bottom of eighth and bottom of the ninth but came up empty as the game continued scoreless. Meanwhile Allie continued to shutdown the Warriors as she did not allow a base runner in extras including striking out the side in the top of the eighth.

The Royals would finally find the hit they needed in the 10th. After Alena De La Torre worked a one out walk Emily Puente stepped to the plate with two outs and crushed a walk off double to right center as the Royals stayed alive with a 1-0 victory in 10 innings.

Game 2:
Olivia Candelas got the start and pitched five innings allowing one run on three hits while striking out five. Allie Puente (27-3) picked up her second win in relief pitching 3 no hit innings while striking out six. Kassie Puente led the Royals offense going 1-for-4 with the walk off hit.

It was another classic pitcher's duel as the Royals looked to stay alive and play their way back into the GSAC Championship. It was the Firestorm though who broke through first with a solo home run in the fifth to make it 1-0. The score would stay that way until the sixth as Jaylyn Hernandez delivered a clutch RBI single to right field to tie the game 1-1.

Allie Puente then came in from the bullpen and shutdown the Firestorm while the Royals looked for the winning hit. This time Emily Puente worked a leadoff walk in the eighth and then two batters later sister Kassie Puente ripped a walk off double that rolled all the way to the wall allowing her sister to race home with the winning running as the Royals prevailed 2-1 in 8 innings.
