Pinal Helps Lead Royals to Doubleheader Split With Warriors

Rocklin, CA – The Hope International University baseball team (23-7, 12-5 GSAC) split a doubleheader with the Jessup University Warriors as they won the first game 20-1 before falling 3-2 in the second game on Friday afternoon in Rocklin, CA.

Game 1:
Connor Martin (5-1) picked up the win pitching 6 shutout innings allowing just four hits while walking two and striking out 14. Matthew Pinal led the Royals offense going 1-for-3 with 4 RBIs.

After putting up 27 runs in their last game the Royals jumped all over the Warriors in the first. With one out Robert Mattei ripped a double to left center to make it 1-0. An RBI groundout then made it 2-0 before Matthew Pinal crushed a three run shot to left to give the Royals a 5-0 lead. The Royals then added a run in the second and the third on a groundout and sac fly to increase their lead to 7-0. Mattei then blasted a two run home run with two outs in the top of the fourth to make it 9-0.

On the other side Connor Martin was brilliant as he continued to shutdown the Warriors offense scattering four hits over six innings of work. A sac fly then pushed the Royals lead to 10-0 while Raul Herrada came in in relief and shutdown the Warriors pitching a scoreless seventh. The Royals continued to add to their lead as Alex Moreno and JJ Cruz delivered RBI singles in the top the eighth to make it 12-0. David Rudd-Grow then came in the bullpen and pitched a scoreless bottom half before the Royals put up a big number in the top of the ninth.

After a one out hit Jacob Savoy unloaded a double to center to make it 13-0. Derek Sims then followed with his first home run of the year, a two run shot to left to make it 15-0. The Royals then loaded the bases for Seth Nelson who delivered a single up the middle to make it 16-0. Ryan Lamastra then followed with an RBI single to make it 17-0. After an RBI groundout made it 18-0 Savoy lined a two run single up the middle to push the Royals lead to 20-0.

The Warriors would then break the shutout with a run in the ninth but Rudd-Grow limited the damage by getting the final batter to foul out as the Royals won 20-1.

Game 2:
Hector Garcia got the start and pitched 5 innings allowing two runs, one earned on two while walking one and striking out six. Bailey Roberson (2-1) took the loss in relief as he failed to record an out in the seventh while allowing one run on two hits while walking one. David Rivera led the Royals offense going 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Despite a strong start from Garcia it was the Warriors who took the early lead on a solo home run in the bottom of the second as they took a 1-0 lead. That wouldn't last for long as the Royals struck back in the top of the third. First David Rivera crushed a game tying solo home run to lead off the inning and make it 1-1. Then later with the bases loaded and one out Omar Veloz delivered a sac fly to put the Royals ahead 2-1.

The score would stay that way until the bottom of the fifth when the Warriors took advantage of an error to tie the game 2-2. The Royals offense tried to break through and take the lead again but were unable to do so and instead the Warriors walked it off in the bottom of the seventh winning 3-2.
The Royals wrap up their three game series against Jessup on Saturday, April 8 at 1:15 PM in Rocklin, CA.
