Veloz Powers Royals To Record Breaking Performance in Rout of Hawks

Fullerton, CA – The Hope International University baseball team (22-6) won their fifth game in a row as they set a new program record for runs in a game with a commanding 27-9 win over the San Diego Christian College Hawks on Wednesday afternoon at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA. This was a makeup of an earlier rainout that was supposed to be in San Diego so the Royals were the designated visitors.

Alexander Shadid got the start and pitched 3 1/3 innings allowing two runs on five hits while striking out three. Raul Herrada (1-2) picked up the win in relief pitching 2/3 of an inning allowing no hits while striking out two. Omar Veloz led the offense going 3-for-3 with 4 RBIs.

After a scoreless first the Royals jumped all over the Hawks in the top of the second. With the bases loaded and one out Veloz ripped a double into center to make it 2-0. Chase Hanson then delivered an RBI groundout to make it 3-0 and then Junior Coleman scored on a passed ball as the Royals took a 4-0 lead. The Royals then added to their lead in the third as they scored on back to back wild pitches to make it 6-0.

The Hawks would strike back for two runs in the bottom of the third to make it 6-2 but the Royals answered right back in the top of the fourth. After a double started the inning Veloz crushed a two run home run to left to make it 8-2. Hanson then went back to back with a blast to right to make it 9-2. Jung-Goldberg blasted a three run shot over the center field wall to give the Royals a 12-2 lead. The Royals continued to score in the fifth as Hanson got things started with an RBI triple to make it 13-2. He would later score on an error to make it 14-2. Another error made it 15-2 before Robert Mattei lined an RBI double to right to make it 16-2. A sac fly, an error and a fielder's choice led to three more runs as the Royals took a commanding 19-2 lead.

The Hawks answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth but the Royals got right back to work in the top of the sixth. With two on and one out Mattei ripped a two run double to center to make it 21-3. J.J. Cruz then smashed a two run shot to center to make it 23-3. Another run scored on a wild pitch before Hanson delivered a two out RBI single to make it 25-3. The Hawks would answer with three runs in the bottom half to make it 25-6. The Royals weren't done though as Owen Beebe added an RBI double and Seth Nelson added an RBI single in the top of the eighth to give the Royals a 27-6 lead. The Hawks would put up three in the bottom half but it wasn't enough as the Royals prevailed 27-9.

The Royals continue GSAC play as they head up to Northern California to take on Jessup with a doubleheader on Friday, April 7 at noon in Rocklin, CA.
