De La Torre and Puente Lead Royals to Doubleheader Split With Hawks

Fullerton, CA – The Hope International University softball team (23-5, 11-3 GSAC) ran their win steak to 11 games with a 6-1 win before they lost the second game of a doubleheader 6-0 as they spit with the San Diego Christian College Hawks on Monday afternoon in Santee, CA.

Game 1:
Allie Puente (15-1) picked up the win throwing a complete game allowing just one run on one hit while striking out 16 and walking one. Alena De La Torre led the Royals offense going 1-for-3 with 3 RBIs

After a scoreless first the Royals jumped on top in the top of the second. They started with a walk and a sac bunt before Kassie Puente ripped an RBI double to left to put the Royals up 1-0. Then later with two outs Emma McCraw delivered a clutch single through the left seft to make it 2-0. The Hawks would strike back in the bottom of the inning though on a home run to make it 2-1.

From there Allie Puente kept dealing as she didn't allow a hit while walking just one over the next five innings. The Royals offense meanwhile got back to work as they put up a four spot in the top of the fifth. After two singles to start the inning De La Torre launched a three run bomb to increase the Royals lead to 5-1. Then two batters later Kassie Puente homered as the Royals went on to win 6-1.

Game 2:
Olivia Candelas (2-4) got the start and received the loss pitching 1 inning while allowing one run on two hits.

It was the Hawks who took the early lead as they got runs in the bottom of the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead. The Royals continued to fight but were unable to muster any offense while the Hawks put four more runs on the board in the bottom of the third as the Royals trailed 6-0.

Allie Puente came back into the game to pitch the last few innings as she shutdown the Hawks but the Royals were unable to produce any offense to start a comeback as they fell 6-0.

The Royals return to action on Tuesday, April 4 at 12:00 PM as they host Westcliff for one non conference game at Bastanchury Park in Fullerton, CA.
