Royals Rally Late To Sweep Doubleheader With Firestorm

Glendale, AZ – The Hope International University baseball team (31-7, 19-5 GSAC) swept their final GSAC doubleheader with the Arizona Christian University Firestorm as they won the first game 12-10 before coming from behind to win game two 5-4 on Saturday afternoon at Glendale High School in Glendale, AZ.

Game 1:
Matthew Pinal got the start and pitched 6 innings allowing three runs, two earned on five hits while walking two and striking out seven. Steven Ordorica (6-1) picked up the win in relief pitching 1 1/3 innings allowing two runs, on three hits. Omar Veloz led the Royals offense going 2-for-6 with 4 RBIs.

The Royals jumped on top in the third inning as Max Jung-Goldberg ripped a two out two run double down the left field line to put the Royals up 2-0. Then after a hit batter and an error Veloz delivered a two RBI single to right field to increase the Royals lead to 4-0. The Firestorm would pull back a run in the bottom of the fourth to make it 4-1. The Royals would restore their four run lead in the top of the fourth as Junior Coleman scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-1.

The Firestorm continued to battle as they pushed across two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it 5-3. The Royals answered again though as Robert Mattei unloaded an RBI double to right center to score two more runs and make it 7-3. A bases loaded walk in the eighth then made it 8-3 before the Firestorm answered again to make it 8-4. The Royals then scored two crucial runs in the ninth off an RBI single from Seth Nelson to make it 10-4.

Those runs proved important as the Firestorm came roaring back in the bottom of ninth scoring six runs to tie it 10-10 but the Royals caught a break as Junior Coleman gunned down the potential winning run at the place with a great throw from left as the game headed to extras. With two on and two outs a double by Branden Chun Ming put runners on second and third. Veloz then stepped to the plate and delivered a clutch two run single up the middle to put the Royals back ahead 12-10 in the tenth. Ordorica then recovered from giving up the tying run as he put down the Firestorm 1-2-3 in the ninth to give the Royals the win.

Game 2:
Hector Garcia got the start and pitched 4 innings allowing three runs on three hits while walking one and striking out five. David Rudd-Grow (2-0) picked up the win in relief allowing one run on three hits over two innings of work. Robert Mattei delivered the go ahead RBI to lead the offense.

The Firestorm jumped on top in the bottom of the first with a home run to take a 1-0 lead. Firestorm pitching continued to shutdown the Royals while the offense added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth scoring two more runs to make it 3-0.

The Royals offense finally got going in the top of the fifth as David Rivera delivered a clutch two out RBI single to make it 3-1. Max Jung-Goldberg then followed with an RBI single to right to make it 3-2. The Royals then got the tying run in the sixth as Seth Nelson hit a two out double to start a rally and was quickly driven in by a Junior Coleman single up the middle to make it 3-3.

The Royals then came back to take the lead in the sixth as they took advantage of an error to start the inning and a double then put runners on second and third with one out. Mattei then delivered a sac fly to make it 4-3. Chase Hanson then dropped an RBI single down the right field line to increase the Royals lead to 5-3. Like the first game though the Firestorm battled back in the bottom of the seventh to make it 5-4 but Rudd-Grow came back to get three straight outs to end the game and clinch the win from the Royals.

The Royals will next open up play as the No. 2 seed at the GSAC Tournament on Monday, May 1 at the OC Great Park in Irvine, CA.
