Rivera Helps Lead Royals To GSAC Tournament Opening Win Over Lions

Irvine, CA – The Hope International University baseball team (32-7) opened the GSAC Tourament with a win as they held off a late charge from the Vanguard University Lions to win 9-6 on Monday afternoon at the OC Great Park in Irvine, CA.

Hector Garcia (4-0) picked up the victory pitching 7 innings allowing three runs on four hits while striking out 11. Steven Ordorica picked up his fifth save pitching 1 1/3 innings allowing just two hits while walking one and striking out three. David Rivera led the Royals offense going 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs including one home run.

After three scoreless innings the Royals finally took the lead in the bottom of the fourth. The Royals got things started with one out back to back singles before a fielder's choice from Alex Moreno made it 1-0. Chase Hanson would then score on a wild pitch to make it 2-0. Then with two outs Max Jung-Goldberg crushed a two run home run to right field to increase the Royals lead to 4-0.

Garcia then pitched a scorless fifth as he continued to cruise on the mound while the Royals offense got right back to work in the bottom of the fifth. With two on and two outs Alex Moreno lined an RBI single to center to make it 5-0. Rivera then ripped a two run triple to right center to make it 7-0. The Royals weren't done as two batters later Robert Mattei drilled an RBI single through the right side to make it 8-0.

Garcia continued to shutdown the Lions until they finally broke through in the top of the seventh with a leaddoff home run to make it 8-1. The Royals answered in the bottom half as Rivera launched a solo home run to left field to increase the lead back to 9-1. Garcia then ran into trouble in the top of the eighth as the Lions struck for two more runs knocking him out of the game and making it 9-3. The Lions weren't done as they tacked on two more runs to make it 9-6 but Steven Ordorica got the final out on a strikeout to end the damage.

After the Royals went down 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth the Lions offense continued to threaten in the bottom half as they wouldn't go away easily. The Lions would bring the tying run to the plate with two outs but Ordorica struck him out looking to seal the win for the Royals.

The Royals continue action at the GSAC Tournament as they take on the winner between tonight's Westmont vs The Master's game on Tuesday, May 2 at 2:00 PM at the OC Great Park in Irvine, CA.
