Pinal's Bat and Arm Lead Royals To Series Win and Doubleheader Sweep Against Lions

Fullerton, CA – The Hope International University baseball team (16-4, 6-2 GSAC) swept a doubleheader with the No. 16 Vanguard University Lions winning the important conference game 7-3 and then grinding out a 7-6 victory in the second game at home on Saturday afternoon at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA.

Game 1:
Matthew Pinal (3-0) picked up the victory pitching 4 innings allowing two runs on four hits while walking two and striking out four. Pinal also led the Royals offense going 2-fo-3 with 4 RBIs including a three run home run.

The Lions once again jumped on top early as they got two runs in the top of the second to take a 2-0 lead. The Royals got right to work in the next inning as they took advantage of a Lions error before Omar Veloz ripped an RBI single into center for the Royals first hit as they made it 2-1 in the bottom of the third.

Pinal would then take care of the Lions in the top of the fourth as the Royals got right back to work in the bottom half. After two walks it was Pinal who stepped to the plate and crushed a three run bomb to right field to put the Royals ahead 4-2 and help his own pitching effort. The Lions would answer with a run in the top of the fifth but the Royals got it right back in the bottom half as Robert Mattei unleashed a home run over the left field wall to put the Royals ahead 5-3.

The Royals then added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth as Pinal drove in another run followed by a wild pitch that scored another as the Royals increased their lead to 7-3. Ryan Lachemann came in from the bullpen and shutdown the Lions, pitching three innings while allowing one run on two hits while walking one and striking out five as the Royals won 7-3.

Game 2:
Seth Hoetker got the start pitching 1 2/3 innings allowing two runs on four hits while walking three. Tyler Tilton (1-0) picked up the win in relief pitching 3 1/3 innings allowing just one hit while striking out two. Steven Ordorica picked up his fourth save getting the last out. David Rivera led the Royals offense going 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a home run.

Once again the Lions jumped on top first as they took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. That didn't last long as the Royals quickly got it back with a double followed by a two run shot to right field by David Rivera to tie the game 2-2. The Royals weren't done as Pinal doubled to left before Junior Coleman lined a bouncer past the third baseman to make it 3-2. Alejandro Torres then delivered a single deep in the infield to increase the Royals lead to 4-2.

The game would remain that way until the bottom of the fifth when the Royals added a run on a balk to make it 5-2. The Lions fought back as they hit back to back home runs in the top of the sixth to cut the Royals lead to 5-4. The Royals then took advantage of a Lions error as they restored their lead to two runs at 6-4 in the bottom of the sixth. Once again the Lions got one in the top of the seventh and the Royals quickly answered in the bottom half on a sac fly to make it 7-5.

The Lions kept coming as they made it 7-6 in the top of the ninth, but Ordorica came out of the bullpen with the go ahead run at the plate and struck out the only batter he faced to win the game and pick up the save.

The Royals continue their season at home as they take on Providence Christian College on Tuesday, March 7 at 6:00 PM at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA.
