Jung-Goldberg Clutch Hit Helps Lead Royals to Comeback Win Over Golden Eagles

Fullerton, CA – The Hope International University baseball team (21-6) won their fourth game in a row as they took down the La Sierra Golden Eagles 16-10 on Tuesday afternoon at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton.

Alexander Shadid got the start and pitched 1 2/3 innings allowing five runs, four earned on five hits while walking one and striking out three. Justin Drury (3-1) picked up the win in relief pitching 2 innings allowing one run on two hits while striking out two. Branden Chun-Ming led the offense going 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs.

The Royals jumped all over the Golden Eagles in the bottom of the first as they put up a big number. First they took an advantage of an error to make it 1-0 then two batters later Chun-MIng lashed a two run double to center field to put the Royals up 3-0. Omar Veloz then delivered an RBI groundout to make it 4-0 before Junior Coleman crushed a two run shot over the center field wall to increase the Royals lead to 6-0.

The Golden Eagles weren't going to go down easily though as they put up five runs in the second inning to make it a 6-5 ballgame. They then added three runs in the third and one in the fourth to take a 9-6 lead. The Royals regrouped though as their offense came back to life in the bottom of the fifth. After two singles and a walk loaded the bases with nobody out a sac fly by Derek Sims made it 9-7. Alex Moreno then followed with an RBI single over the outstretched glove of the second baseman to make it 9-8. The Royals then retook the lead as Max Jung-Goldberg on a full count ripped a clutch two run double down the right field line to put the Royals back ahead 10-9. They weren't done there as they added two runs on a hit by pitch and wild pitch as they went up 12-9.

The Golden Eagles though kept coming as they pulled a run back in the top of the sixth to make it 12-10. The Royals then took advantage of an error as they reestablished their three run lead in the bottom half. The Royals weren't done as they added to their lead in the bottom of the seventh. First Chun-Ming ripped an RBI double into centerfield after a leadoff double by JJ Cruz to make it 14-10. Later in the inning Sims delivered a perfect RBI sac bunt to make it 15-10. The Royals would then add one more run on a wild pitch as they took a 16-10 lead into the eighth.

From there the Royals pitching shutdown the Golden Eagles with Seth Hoetker putting them down 1-2-3 in the ninth as the Royals won 16-10.

The Royals continue play at home next week as they host the University of Antelope Valley on Tuesday, April 4 at 4:00 PM at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton, CA.
