Royals Go Top of GSAC Standings With Sweep of Warriors

Fullerton, CA – The Hope International University softball team (22-4, 10-2 GSAC) took full control of first place in the GSAC standings as they swept the Jessup University Warriors winning 6-1 and 4-3 on Saturday afternoon at Bastanchury Park in Fullerton.

Game 1:
Allie Puente (14-1) picked up the win throwing a complete game allowing just one unearned run on five hits while striking out 11. Emma McCraw and Marissa Hernandez led the Royals offense driving in two runs each.

After putting down the Warriors in order to start the game the Royals offense quickly got to work in the bottom of the first. The Royals took advantage of two errors to load the bases before Alena De La Torre ripped a single up the middle to put the Royals up 1-0. Hernandez then delivered a two run single to right center to increase the Royals advantage to 3-0. The Royals then added to their lead in the bottom of the third as they took advantage of an error to make it 4-0. Then with two outs McCraw dropped a two run single down the right field line as the Royals took a commanding 6-0 lead.

On the other side Allie Puente was dealing as she didn't allow a run until the Warriors got one unearned in the top of the sixth to make it 6-1. Allie then ran into a little trouble in the top of the seventh but induced a flyout to end the game as the Royals won 6-0.

Game 2:
Olivia Candelas got the start pitching 2 innings allowing three runs on four hits while walking one and striking out one. Grace Craig (4-0) picked up the win in relief pitching 4 no hit innings while walking four and striking out one. Allie Puente picked up her third save and second in two days as she pitched the final inning allowing no hits while striking out two. Arely Coronado led the Royals offense by driving in the winning run.

The Royals got things started in the bottom of the first as they started with a double and a single before Emily Puente grounded a fielder's choice to the shortstop to put the Royals up 1-0. The Royals lead wouldn't last for long as Jessup struck for three runs in the top of the second to take a 3-1 lead.

The Royals though battled back to tie it in the bottom of the fourth. After back to back singles got things started Ariana Corondo drove in a run on a fielder's choice to cut it to 3-2. The Royals then tied it 3-3 on an error which is where the score reamined until the sixth.

Not wanting to risk extra innings the Royals searched for the go ahead run in the bottom of the sixth. The Royals used their speed as they took advantage of an error, walk and in infield single to load the bases with two outs. Arely Coronado then delivered the go ahead hit with a perfect infield single to put the Royals up 4-3. Allie Puente then came in in the top of the seventh and got the final three outs as the Royals emerged victorious.

The Royals resume GSAC play on the road as they travel down south to take on San Diego Christian with a doubleheader on Friday, March 31 beginning at 12:00 PM.
