Mattei Helps Lead Royals To Series Sweep of Spirit

Fullerton, CA – The Hope International University baseball team (20-6, 10-4 GSAC) took down the Ottawa University Arizona Spirit 7-3 to finish off a three game sweep on Saturday afternoon at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton.

Matthew Pinal got the start and pitched 4 1/3 innings allowing two runs on four hits while walking two and striking out two. Bailey Roberson (2-0) picked up the victory in relief pitching 1 2/3 innings allowing one run on one hit while striking out two. David Rivera and Robert Mattei led the Royals offense, driving in two runs each.

The Royals jumped on top of the Spirit immediately as Chase Hanson and Rivera blasted back to back home runs to leadoff off the first inning and put the Royals up 2-0. The Spirit quickly answered with a home run of their own in the bottom of the second to tie the game 2-2.

The score didn't stay that way for long as the Royals answered in the bottom of the third. After loading the bases on two walks and a hit batter the Royals made the Spirit pay as Mattei ripped a two run double to left to put the Royals ahead 4-2. J.J. Cruz then delivered a sac fly to increase the Royals advantage to 5-2.

The Spirit weren't going to go down easily though as they scored another run in the top of the sixth to make it 5-3 but the Royals had all the answers as a Rivera infield single made it 6-3 in the bottom of the seventh. The Royals then added another run in the bottom of the eighth as Derek Sims ripped a two out RBI triple down the right field line to make it 7-3. Steven Ordorica then shutdown the Spirit throwing two hitless innings while striking out two as the Royals won 7-3.

The Royals return to action at home as they host La Sierra on Tuesday, March 28 at 6:00 PM at Duane Winters Field in Fullerton.
